Show It's Up to You . . . Citizens Are Responsible for Snow Removal Many citizens have called city hall and the police department requesting information on the responsibility for removal of snow from sidewlks. City code states that "it shall be unlawful for any occupant or the owner of any property abutting on any street, within the platted portion of the city, to neglect or fail to clean and keep clean, of all weeds, ice, snow, or rubbish, rub-bish, the sidealks in front of his premises." The code further states specifically that it is the duty of the owner or tenant to remove all snow and or ice from sidewalks if their property pro-perty abuts or adjoins public sidewalks. The law provides for twenty four hour written notice to be sent to seriuous violaters of the code and that if they then fail to remove the snow and or ice the city has the right to remove the snow and assess the cost against the property which will be collected with the taxes. The majority of residents voluntarily volun-tarily comply with this law as well as the other ordinances, and it is hoped that this article will serve as a reminder and encouragement to complete com-plete the snow removal process. This is also a good time to trim back shrubs and trees that extend over the sidewalks. A special thanks is extended to the many residents who assisted those in-trouble in-trouble during the bad weather. Many comments were heard describing describ-ing instances of high school students helping to get cars back on the road, drivers stopping to assist other drivers, and in at least one instance providing the use of a truck to shuttle a patient over a bad road, to the ambulance. am-bulance. Many acts of asistance were rendered without thought for remuneration or commendation, and we express our thanks to all who helped. |
