Japanese Then on January 13, Coach Henry's squad will host the Japanese Junior National All-Star- Fans may recall the Japanese team that came to PG about two year ago and remember the great show they put on that night. The Japanese team that year wrestled an all-sta- r team from Utah County and throughly trounced the local boys. The same format was con-sidered this year; after the way PG has been beating the county teams, Coach Henry decided that his own varsity would do as well as anybody. So it will be PG varsity against the Japanese on January 13. In all fairness to the county boys and the PG team, it should be pointed out that the matches will be "freestyle", a technique that the Japanese excell in. Also, the team from Japan is a National team made up of 18 year old boys. Be that as it may, the 13th will be a great night for wrestling fans in the valley. PG might even win a match or two! They came home late Saturday morning with a 2 record. In the first game the sophomores, without an in-jured Craig Cottle, started slowly against a man-to-ma- n defense. The first-yea- r Vikings trailed most of the game and pulled to within three points with 27 seconds in the final quarter. Kim Walker and Kevin Ash played very well in a losing cause. Matti Julkenen came off the bench to score well in place of a foul troubled Wayne Whiteley. Final score, Dixie 56 and PG 50. The sophomore record is now 2-- 2 with a loss to Provo and wins against Spanish Fork and American Fork. The Vikings spent most of the half behind by as much as eight points until Garth Han-sen entered the lineup. Hansen blocked three shots and pulled down several rebounds to stiffen up the PG defense that carried the Vikes into the dressing room with a seven point lead at halftime. With six minutes to play in the fourth quarter and down by 10 points, the Flyers em-ployed a zone press. For PG the results were very good as the Vikings raced to an 18 point lead and won, 65-5- PG 65 Dixie 50 Moosman 2 4 Kohler 3 6 Larson 2 6 Peay 11 24 Phillips 3 6 Johnson 2 11 Searle 10-- 2 Hansen 2 6 Gillman 0 0 Johnson 0 0 PG 12 30 44 65 Dixie 10 23 36 50 Varsity Dixie's varsity didn't sur--, prize anyone as they played their traditional variety of zone defenses and zone! presses. The Flyers led by as much as ten points during the first half. David Ratliff kept PG in the game by scoring 10 poin-- 1 ts. Dixie led by three at half-- 1 time due to their ability to penetrate the Viking zone for some easy baskets. On the other hand, PG picked up several "cripples" going through the Flyer zone press. Mark Walker picked up his fourth personal foul with 4:37 left in the third period. After that Dixie stretched their lead to nine points with the aid of several Viking miscues and untimely personal fouls. Dixie's offense could do no wrong against any defense the Vikes could throw at them and went on to win 68-4- Top Sports Photo : tVWWVWVWVVVVHVVVWV '! .'.f.
