Valley View PTA Off to Exciting Year, Ready to Go Valley View PTA is off to an exciting new year under P resident Mrs. Paul Giles and her council. The reading program in the second grade -j underway and progressing well. The homeroom mothers are all ready to start work. Thursday Oct 23rd the council will be having a ' Teachers Appreciation" tea to show their apreciation to t he teachers and aquaint them v. ith the council. We need your support. , w ' W ' ' - f , I s r' yj-- i - I - HONORED Boyd Walker and Maxine Smith shared high point honors recently in the District 10 Riding Club Season. Also sharing high point honors was Walt Norman. Walker, ornisn end Smith Are Honored Boyd Walker , Walt Norman and Maxine Smith have been honored by the District Ten riding club association of the Utah State Western Riding Club association as high-poi-men and lady for the riding season. Maxine has been a member of the Bridlettes riding club for ' the past six years. She placed first in Drill "C "and Matched Pairs com-petition, second in team barrells and Parade "C" third in ladies pleasure class; and fourth in team poles. In Region competitin, she was a member of the first place drill team and placed fifth in the matched pairs contest. She rides a quarter horse named "Sulky." Boyd Walker is a member of the Utah County Sheriff's Posse. He placed first in stock horse, V race, trailer race and parade "C", competition during the season; second in matches pairs, re-la- y race and pony express races; and third in team barrel and hide race competition. In region, he was first in pony express; fourth in stock horse; and sixth in matched pairs, he rides a quarter horse named "Easy." Walt Norman is as member of the Roughouts Riding Club, and he too is no stranger to riding competition. To tie with Mr. Walker in number of points for the season, he placed first in singles poles, Parage "B" competition, team barrels, potato race, pony express, teams poles and keyhole race; and was second in water race competition. In region competition, Mr. Norman placed 1 in team poles contest, the team potato race, and the pony express race. He rides his 18 year old horse, Johnny. JOELALLEN EWELL Mission in Portland Joel Allen Ewell Celled to LDS Mission in Oregon Joel Allen Ewell, son of Walter Allen and Betty Ewell, of Lindon, has been called to the Portland, Oregon field of labor for the LDS Church. His farewell will be held Sunday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m. in the Lin-don Ward Chapel. Elder Ewell will enter the mission home on Oct. 9. Painting by Gary Smith will be unveiled in Bank of Pleasant Grove Friday, Sept. 17. It commemorates the 126th anniversary of Pleasant Grove's founding in .1850. Visitors are welcome. Iltali Artist Paints 'Anniversary Picture The Bank of Pleasant Grove has commissioned Utah artist Gary Smith to recreate Pleasant Grove's first historical event, the battle of Battle Creek, which took place in February of 1849. The six by nine foot painting Will be of-ficially unveiled in the bank building Friday, Sept., 17, commemorating the week, of the 126th anniversary of the city's founding in 1850. The painting will be one of upcoming moving picture "Brigham." "We're very proud of our pioneer heritage," commented Bank of Pleasant Grove president Kay L. Jacobs, "and we're pleased to have Gary Smith help recreate it for us. We'd like to take this op-portunity to invite everyone to visit the bank and share this moment of Pleasant Grove's history with us." three depicting the battle between renegade Utes and a posse formed by Captain John Scott to investigate the theft of cattle from Salt Lake Valley. The clash was the first between the Mormon pioneers and In-dians, ending with the death of four of the Utes. The artist, Gary E. Smith, a graduate of Brigham Young University, has executed historical commissions throughout the state of Utah and is represented in private and university collections across the nation. He is presently involved in recreating the Salt Lake Valley as it appeared in 1847 for the I. ' - I A i 1 "DALE LEWIS BERRY Called on Mission Dale Lewis Berry Will Leave for LDS Mission Field Elder Dale Lewis Berry, son of Lewis and Betty Berry of Manila, has received a mission call from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints. He will labor in the Ecuador-Quit- o Mission, and the date of his farewell has been set for Sunday, Sept. 19, at 3 p.m. in the Manila Ward Chapel. Following his farewell, on Oct. 17, he will enter the Language Training Mission in Provo, for two months of language training, following which he will depart for his mission. He also wishes to invite all friends and relatives to both the farewell and openhouse which will be held at the home of his parents, 9800 North 100 East in Pleasant Grove. 1 MARK WEST Will go to Seoul, Korea Mark West Will Serve LDS Mission In Seoul, Korea Elder Mark West has been called to serve a mission among the people of the Korea Seoul Mission. Son of Mr. and Mrs. David F. West who reside at 385 East 500 South Pleasant Grove. Mark is a graduate of Pleasant Grove High in 1975 and is a four year seminary graduate. He enjoys the out doors and sports. Mark leaves for the L.T.M. located in Provo on October 14. His farewell is set for Sunday September the 19th at two oclock at the Pleasant Grove 1st ward Stake Center. All friends and relatives are invited to attend. ':y-- .r "y :.' LOREN MORTON Will Go to Argentina Loren Morton Will Be Honored Sunday at 3 p.m. A farewell service for Elder Loren Morton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Morton, will be held this Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Pleasant Grove Stake House. Loren has been called to serve in the North Buenos Aires, Argentine Mission and will enter the Language Training Mission on Oct. 7. He is a 1975 graduate of Pleasant Grove High School and has spend one year at Ricks College. The students are getting their exercise running to the seminary and back. They can hardly wait until winter so they can ice skate down the sidewalk. Christensen will be held Sun-day, Sept. 19 at 3 p.m. in the 6th-1- 0 Ward Chapel. Elder Christensen has been called to the Italy Milan Missio. He will be leaving on Sept. 30 for the Language Training Mission. Timponogos Cave Sets Fall Schedule After Labor Day After Labor Day the fall schedule for Timpanogos Cave National Monument will be effective. Tickets for cave tours may be purchased at the Visitor Center from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at a cost of 50 cents for anyone 16 years of age or older. There is no charge for anyone under 16, but they must remain with an adult throughout the entire hike. Groups of 10 or more per-sons need to make reser-vations by calling 756-449- 7 between 8 and 5 p.m. One adult supervisor is required for every ten persons under age 16. The scheduled will remain in effect until October when the caves may be closed for a con-struction project. High School Will Have Military Orientation Day Monday, Sept. 20, there will be a military orientation day at PGHS. Representatives of the military units will be present for interviews with senior and junior students from 8:30 to 10:30. Each studnet will have the opportunity to meet with three different areas of the services. Homecoming Set for Friday at Pleasant Grove High School, Football, Dance, Set "Spirit Brings You Closer to Home" is the theme that began Pleasant Grove High School's homecoming this week. Alumni are invited home with reduced tickets to football game. The student council under the direction of Assistant Principal Kay E. Giles announced there will be a popular vote taken of the studentbody for queen candidates on Tuesday. There will be a homecoming parage on Wednesday, Sept. 15, beginning at 6 p.m. Every club sponsoring a queen will have an entry. Homecoming assembly is scheduled for Thursday morning at 8:30 and candidates will be judged at this assembly and the queen and attendants will be announced. Friday the Vikings will have a pep assembly in the af-ternoon. Football game will be with Payson at 5 p.m. in the Viking Stadium. Homecoming will conclude with a dance in the boy's gym. Starting time for the dance is 8:30, tickets $3.00 per couple, group will be "Cornerstone."
