Show Wrestlers Drop Provo 26 to 1 4 Last Thursday Pleasant Grove Vikings hopped hop-ped all over Provo last Thursday Thurs-day night in what was a cruc-cial cruc-cial match for the Region IV wrestling crown The Vikings, picked to lose by some, were off to a good start in the lower weights and outlasted the Provo Pro-vo team by a decisive 26 to 14 victory. Coach Darold Henry said after af-ter the meet, "some might call us lucky, but we weren't, the kids just wanted to wrestle." Before a packed house the Vikings won the first four vital matches, which both coaches had predicted would be the key to their success, or failure. Sophomore Vaugn Maxfield reversed last year's one-point victory by Alan Myrup, and dominated his foe with a 6-2 decision. PG's Keith Hooley had a 7-5 win over Terry Ellison, Elli-son, who did put up a good battle. At 115 lbs. Viking Jon Bratt looked tough against defending region champ Kim Daley and gained a 5-2 decision. Marty Christiansen pinned Provo's Mike Last at 122 lbs. In the 129 lb match, Provo got on the scoreboard. Defending Defend-ing state champ Craig Prete and Steve Sanderson, two of the four undefeateds in the meet, continued their personal duel for the fourth time in two seasons with Prete coming out the victor, by 8-1. Kevin Christensen got the Vikings back on the scoreboard in the 135 lb. weight by gaining gain-ing a 10-2 decision. Scott Bennett Ben-nett then got a 9-1 decision to put the Vikings farther ahead. The third undefeated grapp-ler, grapp-ler, P.G.'s Dave Phillips, defending de-fending region champ, was a winner over James Loveless in (Continued on page 6) PGHS Wrestling (Continued from page 1) one of the best matches of the night, 11-6. From then on it was Provo's turn, until the heavyweights. They still had a chance to pull it out but didn't get the necessary neces-sary pins as they trailed 24-3. Bruce Kemp decisioned Dave Pollmann in the 158 class, 3 to 1, Provo's Charlie Garner dec. Reed Swenson, P.G. 4 to 0, and Mark Ellis dec. Bruce Bezzant P.G. 5 to 0. The heavyweight match ended end-ed in a 1-1 tie, with P.G.'s "little" heavyweight Craig Faux and Provo's Paul Olson giving an action-packed performance, perfor-mance, both men mustering one escape for a 1-1 tie. The Viking wrestlers go to American Fork tonight (Thursday) (Thurs-day) for a tilt with the A.F. crew, and expect to stay undefeated unde-feated there. In fact, the Vikes should go through the Region IV wars undefeated this year. |
