Show THURSDAY, DECEMBER 28, 1972 PLEASANT GROVE REVIEW, PLEASANT GROVE, UTAH THURSDAY, DECEMBER 28, 1972 Industry Executive Sees Leveling Off In Food Prices During 1973 Year The rise in food prices should slow considerably in the first months of 1973, ac-cording to Lawrence W. Alder, Executive Director of the Ut-ah Retail Grocers Association. Mr. Alder predicted that the expected 4 per cent increase in food prices for 1972 (over 1971) will be reduced to about half that rate, based projec-tion by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, as increased production rises to meet de-mand. He pointed out that food consumption in 1972 is expec-ted to set a new record as it did in 1971. Increased consum-er demand for meat products has contributed to the increase in these prices, but larger sup-plies now reaching the market should help ease the price sit-uation. Increased use of poul-try, fish and dairy products is also helping the meat price situation. The food industry official pointed out that while the per capita consumption of food has declined almost 100 lbs since 1940, the per capita consumption of meat has con-tinued to rise, reflecting the growing affluence of this coun-try. It has increased from 166.4 pounds in 1940 to 221.5 pounds today while production has not been able to keep pace. Mr. Alder said that the food industry, generally, has done a remarkable job in holding the lid on prices, and cited these figures to substantiate this statement: Since 1961, the price of food has increased 29 per cent, while the price of other goods and services has in many in-stances been two or three times as great. As example, the cost of home maintenance and repair services has incre ased in this period by 73 per cent, auto repair services 45 per cent, public transpoiluliw. 63 per cent and hospital room charges 163 per cent. But even more important, he added, is the fact that food today takes less of the fam-ily budget than it has at any time in our history. In the U. S. the figure now is 15.6 per cent of the family budget down 5 per cent in the last ten years. This compares with 24.8 per cent for England, 37.0 per cent for Japan and 60.7 per cent for countries such as China. "Let me make one more comparsion," Mr. Alder said. "One hour's work in a factory today buys 11.7 quarts of milk In 1950 it bought 7.5 quarts. One hour's work in a factory buys 2.6 pounds of round steak today. In 1950 it bought 1.5 pounds. The same situation prevails with other food pro-ducts License Plate Mail-i- n Forms Are Now Out, Says County Assessor All car owners of Utah Coun-ty who have owned their ve-hicles since August should have now received their mail-i- n forms for 1973 license plates according to Harrison Con-ove- r, Utah County Assessor. Mr. Conover reports that mail-i- n forms have been sent out to some 50,000 passenger car owners, His office i3tx.iow preparing to mail out forms for pick-u- p trucks and they should be in the mail this week. A deadline, for Jan. 31 has been set fqs-maili-ng in the ap-plications ffor licenses. Persons who have recently purchased vehicles, or who wish to ob-tain their plates in person will have until the end of February to obtain them in person at the County Building. Mr. Conover points out that his office was able to mail out only , two license plate forms per envelope. If residents have additional vehicles and did not receive their forms in the mail, they may telephone his office and the forms will be typed up and sent out. He warns, how-ever that the car owner must have his registration form in front of him when he tele-phones, so that he can relay the proper information con- - cerning serial numbers and other details. Each year the office licenses some 90,000 vehicles, including passenger cars and pick-u- p trucks. Owners of larger trucks are required to go to the office to pick up their plates. Soon after the first of the year, the office will begin mailing out license forms for boats and campers which were previously registered. Owners who purchased boats and campers recently will have to j go to the County Building to get their registration in person. By the first of the year, the Assessor's office will also be-gin mailing out tax forms for mobile homes which were as-sessed previously. Along with these will go notices that the taxes must be paid within 90 days. Mr. Conover said field men will be checking all the mobile home parks to pick up any new registrations. The forms mailed out the previous registrations will carry red stamps instruct-ing the postmaster not to for-ward them.
