Show Scouters Publish Booklet for Use In Project About Conservation I The Utah National Parks Council, Boy Scouts of America has published a 28-page booklet of guidlines for scouting units participating in Project SOAR, the 1971 conseration good turn to be conducted by the Boy Scouts on a nationwide basis. The booklet will serve as a tool for Explorer advisors, Scoutmasters Scout-masters and Cubmasters, as well as a key personnal in the various scouting districts. Cecil J. Zimmermann, Spring-ville, Spring-ville, is serving as council chairman for Project SOAR. His committee members, who will serve as consultants thru 1971, include David W. McDan-hatchery McDan-hatchery biologist, Bureau of Sports Fisheries and Wildlife; J. Merrill Bushnell, vice president presi-dent and general manager of Pacifice States Cast Iron Pipe Co.; Clarence S. Thornock forest for-est supervisor, Uinta National Forest; LaVar A. Ware, supervisor, super-visor, Cental Regional Office of the Utah Fish and Game Department; Ralph H. Felker, area conservationist, US Soil Service ; Henry J. Heish, sports and recreation leader; and Floyd Loveridge, chief executive execu-tive of the Utah National Parks Council, BSA. Also working with the commitee were Richard Rich-ard B. Bolton, chairman of the council Explorer committee and David Barrus and Ed Dar- rel, Explorer scouts. The committee compiled information in-formation for the booklet, which was edited by Josephine S. Zimmerman. Copies of the booklet will be distributed to unit leaders and key scouting peopule throughout the council area. Mr. Zimmerman reports that planning for project SOAR is now underway. One of the major events thruout America, will be Scouting's Keep America Amer-ica Beautiful Day, June 5, 1971 On that date, five million members mem-bers of the Boy Scouts of America Amer-ica will conduct a showcase project to focus the attention of the American public on one major environmental problem. Club dens and Scout troops will be cleaning up areas within their own communities, as well as highways, recreation areas streams and lake shores. Scouting units will be seeking the cooperation of various community organizations and government officials and agencies agen-cies on all levels in this massive mass-ive clean-up campaign. Kickoff for Project SOAR will be conducted during February and a major conservation project pro-ject should be launched by March 20. This project or other conservation activities should be continued through April, May and June. |
