Show Alpine School ioard Plans Future Needs At the regular meeting of the Alpine District Board of Education Edu-cation held October 15, 1969, in American Fork Superintendent Dan W. .Peterson presented for board information a district growth study concerned basically basic-ally with pointing out possible building needs within the relative rela-tive immediate and more distant dist-ant future. The study was made on a total district basis with each of the four high school community areas individually considered. Dr. Peterson pointed out that during the two years from October Oct-ober 1, 1967 to October 1, 1969, there was an increase of 392 students with the same grades of the district. This means that including all the "drop-outs" and "move-outs" there were 392 more students in attendance October 1, 1969 than on October 1, 1967. If this pattern proves to be realistic and continues, it would mean that the district is growing at about the rate of a new elementary school every two years. Board Considers Building Sites For Future Needs Because of sharply increasing real estate prices and the need of replacaing the condemned junior high buildings at American Ameri-can Fork, Pleasant Grove, and Lincoln Junior at Orem, the board of education authorized Superintendent Dan W. Peterson Peter-son to move toward acquiring a site for a junior high building in the Orem area and a site for a senior high complex that will include the American Fork and Pleasant Grove areas. In the latter situation, the present high schools would replace the existing condemned junior high biuldings. Harvey Smith, Pleasant Grove area representative on the Alpine Al-pine District Board of Education Educa-tion said Monday morning, that the press release of the October 15 board meeting was perhaps misleading. The only immediate immed-iate step approved by the board at this time would be the acquiring of sites for possible future building needs, he stated. sta-ted. Mr. Smith pointed out the rapid inflated costs of real-estate. real-estate. "When we last purchased purchas-ed building sites in the Orem area, the going price was $12,000 per acre.' Now the asking ask-ing price is more than double that figure, he added. He also stated that he understands under-stands that any plans for the building of new senior high schools in the American Fork-Pleasant Fork-Pleasant Grove areas is projected pro-jected to at least 10 years in the future. . As to the "condemnation" of the Pleasant Grove, American Fork and Lincoln (Orem) Junior High School buildings, Mr. Smith remarked, that to his knowledge ,no official condemnations con-demnations had been made.. Superintendent Peterson reviewed re-viewed for board information the State Board of Education's "Drug Abuse Survey." The survey conducted by the State Board of Education at the direction of the Governor last May. The findings, although tending to point out some definite defin-ite problems, show Alpine District Dis-trict to be somewhat below the state average in the use of marijuana, speed, glue, and LSD. It is anticipated, that with further refinement the survey figures will be publicized public-ized in the future. |
