Show OR DR PETERSON TAKES OFFICE SEPTEMBER 1 keynote keynote of ney new administration of er utah agricultural college la Is to people september septemo 1 dr E 0 peterson takes office a as s president of the utah ag agricultural ra c a A college au succeeding acee ding dr J A Wid tsoo who becomes pre president sl of f the ahe university of 0 utah september 19 1916 the doors of the college open for the twenty seventh year y ear of its existence these two facts make it import important ant that the people of of this state be furnished furnish ed with a state ment of the alms aims and ideals of ther the great industrial school the utah ag cultural rl college education today means that men and women be educated to think and trained to do the people of utah demand that their sons and daughters receive during their school career an appreciation of the worth while e things in life and they demand just as ad persistently that their sons an and d daughters receive a training that will enable a ble them to do the necessary work of th the e world in a creditable manner when edu education atlon combines combine these thes e two ado ideals culture and tra training in ing it Is a tremendous power for social advancement the utah A agricultural college has combined these two ideals the s work of the institution Is so arranged that all of its students receive tho the culi cultural ural advancement so necessary to our present society bo clety at the same ume they are being trained in their chosen field for a life of service historically the college was created in a time of national distress the pe P dr E G peterson new head of utah agricultural college 1 lod just following the civil war it was organized primarily to train citizens therefore both state and federal provision lor for a broad and liberal training in agriculture agricultural engineering home economics commerce and business business administration and in the natural and physical sciences the college cin can and does make of its students complete citizens as well as industrial or commercial experts ex p erts problems P r of the th a farmer of the business man of the mechanic are its problems the training of 0 women in the greatest of fields homebuilding is its duty thi the welfare of the entire rural community Is its interest the fieldor fiel dof industrial education edu bation ta ia vast in the rural community there are farmers to be trained and farmers homes to be built roads over which the farm products may be carried must be maintained problems of rural sanitation and water supply must be met and solved the social life lif e of the farm presents present sj special problems for the student of sociology and the marketing of farm products pre intricate problems tor the agricultural economist mechanics must be trained to study the needs of the farmer and create for him lavor laior sav ing machines many young men and young women have not and do not care car e to take aake a high school education the college realizes the needs of these people and knows that could they avail themselves of the equipment and instruction ari an institution buchas such as the college offers they would gladly do it for that reason all who are eighteen or over ove rare are welcome to take any courses at the utah agricultural college which they can pursue with profit |
