Show 1 U is S should devote one per cent of military expenditures to peace work by JOHN J MURPHY of new deyot Ne york Yot i though war may not bo be the worst of evils from which a nation can s affer it is a calamia calamity y so BO great as to justify all ordinary or extraordinary mel lasures which would tend to prevent it it is the duty of the united states government which spends so eo much of the peoples money every year in the maintenance pf af military machinery to undertake continuous work for afie the elimination of the causes which lead up to war should not the united states government deduct one per cent of the amount annually devoted to military and naval upkeep t to 0 ie be expended under the direction of a voluntary commission appointed by the president to study the causes of war and how they may be eliminated to promote among the various peoples of the world a better understanding of each other to maintain a bureau to ascertain and advertise what interests are maintaining propaganda for fomenting dissensions among peoples and in hi general to take such steps that may seem best to the commission to secure for the united states the lasting blessing of peace although only one per cent of the amount annually annuala v y expended expender expend eI for military purposes would be available for the use of this commission that sum is large enough to maintain a laboratory to study conditions to formulate remedies and to disseminate broadcast the recommendations of the commission truthful bubli publicity city is the best antidote of war Is it too much to ask that if we devote 99 per cent to war that we should give one per cent for IK ace |
