Show IS GAME BILL IN INTEREST OF ECONOMY our hats arkoff to senator claud hirschi of th this is senatorial d district for standing up for what in our opinion is the right thing in regards to the reorganization of the state fish and game commission ile he voted no to a 3 man commission our understand understanding ing of the bill is that our present one man commission would be replaced by a three man commission appointed by the I 1 governor 0 1 if this is in the interest of economy in running our state government I 1 we fail to see it 1 the bill that passed the third reading on wednesday provides that a ahree man commission will be set up in addition to the commissioner each member of this con coin mission will be paid a yearly salary of plus an allowance of expenses at present the state fish and game commissioner is paid a yearly salary of a year and is handling fish and game matters successfully so to satisfy the selfish interests of a few well add three more members who will have to be paid about more out of the sportsmans sports mans pocket however if establishing this commission is a mere front to hand out political plums and as a result take our fish and game department down off a high plane on which it has been run by our present commission and place it in the hands of a few whose sole interest would be to perpetuate themselves in off office ice rather than to improve the fish and game on our forests and public lands then we can see the wisdom of such a move on the part of the powers that be we doubt very much that there are arc more than two men cri in in the entire state of utah wiio whore ir i c capable of handling this department as efficiently as it is being run at present and we are also absolutely certain under the reorganization plan that neither of these men would be appointed as the commissioner I 1 in the past ten years under the guidance of our present commissioner utah has made more progress gressin in fish culture including fish ponds hatcheries and waters stocked I migratory bird refuges and big game propagation man almost any other state in the union and certainly more tharl than any other western state if our present commissioner is such a bad actor and thorough ly acquainted with our problems as well as those of surrounding states why is he president of the association of western game commissioners and why is he a director of the international association with representatives I 1 presenta tives from all parts of this continent also why have more than 51 54 sportsmens Sports mens organizations in utah I 1 adopted resolutions asking that 1 he be retained as commissioner I 1 many of these like our own 1 local organization whose membership is made up largely of livestock owners and farmers and who work tofic am in closest cooperation we cant see the sense to such a change unless it is to s so i 0 entangle the affairs of the department that all or a very large barf pan of the funds now being spent advantageously in project developments will beted bated be tied up in administrative affairs and never inthe in the world teach reach the places for which they were intended neither can we see why the sports man should be the scapegoat goat tor for an idea that we doubt will ever work funds that are used by the fish and game department co come ne from the pocketbooks othe sportsmen not from general taxation why then the sport sportsmen smeT be consulted and given a say as to lo who shall administer their ai a r airs |
