Show NEED TO TAKE STOCK in an opinion given recently li judge burton relative to prisoner being made to work extracts fron cheh the times quoted the judat made some very per pertinent nant statements concerning law enforcement causer ot of crime etc not the least important of his statements Is found in a closing paragraph of that opinion anc am runs to the effect that it Is high time that the courts and the officer cerF of oc the law were taking stock of then selves with a view of correcting some of the abuses to which our attention has teen been called it if they exist it la Is pretty generally conceded that the bar association should clean house within and then they will bf be in better condition to function ap af they should and to command the respect to which our courts and our rep of the law are entitled some of the practices into which they have drifted are positively absurd the ease case with which shrewd attorneys can get continuance after continuance postponements postpone ments and delays particularly chere people of prestige or influence are charged with law violations is not conducive to respect for law and the courts it savors too much of childs play and when it come to persons who are arc known to be guilty of dastardly crimes being turned loose on trivial technicalities the situation appeals to the layman as absolutely ridiculous redi culous another thing which Is conducive to disrespect tor for the law and the courts Is lack of harmony among officers bickering and suspicion the situation which prevails in our own judicial district Is not a wholesome one the scrap in the campaign tour four years ago brought about a situation which was anything but conducive to respect tor for the officers and the be officers of the court and time seem to blot out the differences feren ces existed As a datter of fact we are threatened with even a worse condition already there are some mighty strained relations and the campaign is only in its infancy since the members of the bar seem hopelessly divided and helpless in the matter ot of clearing up a bad mesa it would seem that it Is up to the electorate ot of the district to take the situation in hand and clean house bouse the times has no quarrel with the present officers ln in fact we hope we may be counted among the friends of judge burton we respect and can support him but there are arc those with in the bar association who evidently cant and so long as the discord continues as it apparently will the entire district must be handicapped handi in its of justice and law enforcement menttie The situation would be no better it if he were replaced by some of those who are against him the tight fight would continue the only suggestion the times would otter then Is that it if there lg is a member ot bf the bar in the district with whom the others could work in harmony and without faultfinding and bickering which Is 18 so destructive of respect of law and the courts then that individual should be placed on the binch DT |
