Show FROM THE volunteers ft douglas S L C june 10 1917 to the editor and dear friends at home in response to your request that w we s keep you informed as to our whereabouts and doings I 1 now try to in detail our first week of service to uncle sam after leaving lund and arriving iving at we were left by the officer in charge to go on to salt lake city alone whore where we were met by an officer from the recruiting station who escorted us to the office and after having been taken to one of of the best cafes in the city were te re turned to the office of capt J W wat we watson ason son for examination after two hours of questioning and ph physical meat examination we were given our first papers and sent to the recruiting camp at ft doug I 1 las and upon doing so we were then sent to the post hospital for further exam examinations turns arriving there at shoot about 2 30 0 clocks clock P M we were informed that it was toe late to be examined and we were then released and given the rest of the day and night for our own pleasure it but or t were detailed to report at 7 30 ing monday morning found us all at our or post and after about 7 hours of strenuous physical mental and moral examinations we were again re loosed leased for the rest of the day to ap pear the next morning to lip be sworn in to federal service after being sworn in we were assigned quarters qu artera at the recruits camp located about one fourth of a mile east of the barracks at ft douglas where we were housed in the regular army tents tenta and where we were given an equipment of one canvas couch 3 army blankets and a hav haversack ernek containing our in mess mr kit which consisted of I 1 covered dish I 1 cup and I 1 each of knife fork and spoon penn we eat at the company mess sea house and each one to must wash his own mess mesa kit wednesday we se were issued our clothine clot nine ning which consisted of I 1 part pair shoes I 1 hat am and hat cord denoting your division of wrin service I 1 uniform I 1 pr leggins legging 2 suits under ware 3 pr BOX so al also I 1 shirt thursday we were attached to the infantry and since have just been awaiting orders we have not commenced any drill work as yet but expect to tomorrow to morrow morning we are now located in the following mann manner r merrill mitchell and clayton were sent bent with the others of the medical department to fort russell wo win and the reel met of us are here at ft douglas john peterson Pete raon and moroni morion smith or are at the recruits camp lyman dark clrk and clarence be benson son company G anft scott and bam bain matheson leroy moore J C gould and george jones jonea corn coin 1 I anft willie orton and alma stubbs corn coin M all ali are feeling fine and are right at home and expect to get along very well we have seen men a great many peo mo w pe a from home and trunk them very much for the interest they have hav in our well 11 fare there them Is ig nott nothing ill in Par particular tuI to write wis but hoping to hear it from om any and all our friends who may eare care to i write to us troy may address us in our respective re companies of the infantry infantry at ft douglas S L C utah with best beat regards to all and hoping to return to our homes and loved ones as soon as we have done our duty to our country and our flag we are as ever YOUR BOYS by bojc J C gould could |
