population in this area nearly everyone owned their own home he recalls No water in the house only a few had electricity and there was no central rather heating coal stoves m in the kitchen and living living living liv liv- ing rooms and only a few I were fortunate to have a tele tele- phone I MOST people had bicycles I and a few had a horse or a aI I horse wagon or a buggy Probably Probably Probably ably half the residents had hadI I chickens which they raised for eggs and meat some had a cow and sold fresh milk to their neighbors neighbors' In these surroundings people people peo peo- pie were very close to each other It was in this environment environment environment environ environ- ment that young Juel chose his profession On one occasion a neighbor neighbors neighbor's neighbors neighbor's neigh neigh- bor bors bor's s child was sick took a convulsion and within minutes some 30 people had congregated at the home doing what they could to help in this emergency I was one of these having gone to the home along with my mother Dr Trowbridge related Mother helped care for the I child while my father rode his bicycle two blocks to a telephone to call a doctor The doctor arrived in a surprisingly short time in his horse and buggy complimented everyone everyone everyone every every- one for what they had done I gave the child a shot of something something something some some- thing and then departed It was such a satisfaction to have this kind physician render rend rend- er his lis service I IT WAS years later that I again had contact with a need for medical medica assistance he added Two vo young men were playing robbers with an empty pistol when one of them pointed at liis lus friend and pulled the trigger The gun discharged dis rus- discharged charged into his abdomen Our family by now had a 7 77 7 j U HH H HI I IH telephone and the men came cameto to call the doctor who responded responded responded re re- re- re readily in an auto which wOL would d be considered an antique today I helped another man carry the patient to the car and took him to the hospital where he died that night THESE TWO experiences greatly impressed me and with the usual supper time discussions discussions discussions discus discus- about doctors and their service and value to mankind it was little wonder that as a group of friends walked to the Bryant Junior High School and andone andone andone one friend said he was going to be a physician that I at age 13 responded Im going to be a doctor also We can be partners That evening at supper time Juel told his parents of his decision and they were enthusiastic enthusiastic enthusiastic en en- about it From that time on preparations and plans were made for him to reach his goal I A SCIENTIFIC course
