Show North Rich Mustangs gallop past Miners in league opener by Randy llanskat Again the Park City High School boys' basketball team played a tight and spirited game, but again it lost. Friday night's 63-53 loss to North Rich dropped the team's record to 2-5, but more important, put its league record at 0-1. Park City coach Kent Crit-chlow Crit-chlow was not unhappy with his team's performance. He said the team managed to keep a better handle on its foul situation in the North Rich game. Only one man fouled out, whereas in past weeks two or sometimes three Miners were gone by the conclusion. But the team still had three more fouls than the Mustangs. The Miners also kept a pretty good lid on turnovers, he said. In the early part of the season turnovers cost Park City dearly. But as each week has gone by the Miner offense has gained more poise, according to Critchlow, and is now more patient, not forcing the ball as much. For the most part, Critchlow Crit-chlow said, the Miners' shot selection was good. But good shot selection does not put the ball through the hoop, as the Miners hit only 30 percent per-cent on their field goal attempts. at-tempts. The Mustangs shot almost 10 percentage points better from the field. Critchlow said that what really hurt the team again was the lack of consistent scoring from more than one or two players. Park City got the majority of its scoring from two players, Kenny Collins and Tim Tebbs. Meanwhile, the Mustangs had three players in double figures, plus another four who teamed up for an additional ad-ditional 15 points. Another recurring problem prob-lem which haunted Park City in the North Rich game, according to Critchlow, Crit-chlow, is the way in which the team allows the opponent to jump out to a big lead, a lead which becomes insurmountable insur-mountable later in the game. Friday night Park City let the Mustangs trot out to a 20-9 20-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. That lead grew to 35-21 at the half. In the second half the Miners looked better, and they out-scored out-scored North Rich, but not by enough to overcome the Mustang lead. Again it was Kenny Collins who led the Miner effort, collecting a season high 25 points. He was also active with four assists and four defensive steals, the most of the team. His spiritied offensive offen-sive play, Critchlow said, also caused some fouls to be called against the Mustangs. Center Tim Tebbs had another good game, winding up with 16 points. Tebbs did a good job of controlling his fouls, said Critchlow. He also did well on the boards, pulling down five defensive and three offensive rebounds, high for the team. However, among the remaining Miners, Matt Mapstone was highest scorer with six points. Meanwhile, the third highest scorer for North Rich had 13. The Miners, as has been their pattern in many games T1 this season, started the game tentatively. They didn't make the aggressive plays on defense which they rely on, and the offense wasn't smooth. After one quarter the Miners trailed by 11. In the second quarter, Critchlow said, the Miners played more up to their potential. As a result North Rich only outscored them 15-12 15-12 in the quarter. The Miners really opened up in the second half, out-scoring out-scoring North Rich in both the third and fourth quarters. quar-ters. But the Miners couldn't overcome the deficit. But Critchlow thinks the team is learning and getting better every game, and he likes the spirit. "The kids really played with their hearts in the game," he said. The Miners will have to do its learning on the road because they ' won't have another home game until Jan. 20. The schedule now calls for Park City to travel to Wendover for a non-league non-league contest Dec. 30. mmmmmm mm mmm aaaaaBaaaaaaaaaaaaaaBaalH X 'A f - CI 3S f '. . i , '''I ' , - - i , , ' ' 'J i II If 1 111 -.I ii m .1 in lint .i.liriii i ii I 1 1 I W I Pierre Cardin Dress Reg. $210 Sabours $140.00 If 1 |
