Show Birch, Leavitt, Robinson excel in Miner wrestling 12-3 over Leavitt ' in " the second. But he underestimated un-derestimated the resilience of Leavitt. In the only Miner conquest against the Braves, Leavitt put the pin on him with only one second left in their match. Against South Summit, Leavitt didn't waste any time. After putting his South Summit opponent, Georgio, on the defensive by whipping him to the mat for the first takedown, Leavitt pinned him only 50 seconds into the match. Birch also was victorious, triumphing over Anderson of South Summit in the 132-pound 132-pound class. Birch reversed Anderson's initial takedown, then added up two near falls before putting on the pin 53 seconds into the second period. Other Park City grapplers weren't so fortunate against the South Summit Wildcats. At 105 pounds Reed lost a 10-0 10-0 decision to Riddell. South Summit's McCormick put the squeeze on Robinson at 138 pounds with a first-period first-period pin. And 145-pound Geoff Palmer of the Miners was pinned midway through the second period. In the South Summit exhibition matches for the junior varsity, Miner Steve Jacobson was a pleasant surprise at the 132-pound weight. Leading 9-7 on points, Jacobson pinned his opponent with 1 : 10 left in the third quarter. 1 Brent Adams' was not so lucky. He lasted into the third round with his South Summit opposition at 155 pounds, but was pinned with 48 seconds left. Although Miner point totals were low due to forfeits, for-feits, Park City took two of four varsity matches from Morgan, two of four from Ogden, one of five from North Summit, and two of five from South Summit. However, in the 14 junior varsity exhibition matches, the Miners prevailed in only one. Coach Jesse Schaub said he plans to drop Mike Birch one weight class from 132 to 126 pounds. At that weight Schaub thinks Birch will find the going a little easier. "He should do real well there. He could place at state at that weight," Schaub said. Birch will have to make 126 by Jan. 5 to wrestle at that weight for the regionals and state. In general, Schaub said he likes the way his squad is getting more of the first takedowns in the matches. Although the Miners ahve not had any first takedowns in previous weeks, in the two dual matches they got five. The ratio is still not the greatest, but Schaud said he's pleased with the improvement. im-provement. Park City's next match will be a dual meet on Jan. 5 against South Summit and South Rich at South Rich. by Randy Hanskat Last week the Miner wrestling team faced the Morgan, Ogden, North Summit and South Summit teams in two dual matches. And although the Park City team as a whole didn't fare well, Mike Birch, Ocey Leavitt, Lea-vitt, and Eric Robinson provided pro-vided some bright spots for the Miners. The first dual match, held last Wednesday in Morgan, . pitted the Miners against 3A Ogden and 2A Morgan. Because the Miners lacked entries for many weight classes, most matches were forfeited. But of the four matches wrestled for points, Park City won two with Birch and Robinson providing provid-ing the victories. Birch faced Cragun of Morgan at 132 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Cragun took down Birch in the second, but two reversals by Birch made the final score 4-2 for Park City. Robinson wrestled at 138 pounds against McMillan of Morgan, starting off on the right track with an opening takedown, one of the first garnered by a Miner this season. After gaining the advantage, Robinson moved for the pin and got it at 1:20 into the first period. At 105 pounds Miner Greg Reed also took the opening takedown from opponent Sloan of Morgan. Then in the second period he advanced his lead to 5-2 with a reversal and a technical violation against Sloan. In the third, Sloan countered with a reversal and a quick pin of the surprised Reed 50 seconds sec-onds into the period. Park City's Ocey Leavitt, usually a tough grappler for the Miners, faced one of Morgan's top wrestlers in Thompson at 119 pounds. Thompson got the initial takedown, but Leavitt escaped. Thompson got additional ad-ditional points for a near fall and, with Leavitt on the defensive, got the pin at 1:28 into the match. The Miners also wrestled five exhibition matches against Morgan's junior varsity. Miners John Vet-terli Vet-terli and Mark Richardson at 112 and 126 pounds went down in similar fashion, allowing the opponents to get the first takedown and then quickly falling victim to the pin. Vetterli lasted 20 seconds, sec-onds, while Richardson could only make it 16. Park City's Steve Jacob-son Jacob-son did better at 132 pounds. He escaped from the first takedown, but was losing by a score of 10-3 when he was pinned with 1:30 left in the match. Mike Brose at 145 pounds trailed his Morgan opponent by 4-1 after the first period, then 11-5 in the second, before being pinned with 15 seconds left in the period. At 155 pounds Brent Adams didn't fare as well. He was pinned 30 seconds into in-to the match. Against Ogden Birch and Robinson again saved the day. At 132 pounds, Birch was pitted against Lightner, one of Ogden's best wrestlers. The match was a tight one, the score knotted at 5-5 after two rounds. But a technical violation against Lightner in the third made the difference as Birch won the decision 9-8. Ogden's 138-pound Huntington Hun-tington was Robinson's opponent. op-ponent. After trading takedowns to start the first period, Robinson trailed 5-3 going into the second. The deficit had bulged to 15-8 in the early part of the final period when Robinson, knowing know-ing he had to go for the pin or lose, took advantage of a Huntington error. With only 50 seconds left in the match, Robinson squashed him to the mat. At 119 pounds, Leavitt again had a tough time. He was matched with Ogden's Larkin, and after trailing 5-0 early in the second, was pinned. pin-ned. Reed at 105 pounds also was pinned in the second round. This time Ogden's Rawlings did the honors with 15 seconds left in the second. The J.V. took five losses in five matches. Only Prose at 145 pounds avoided a first round pin, losing 8-4 on points. -v( On Friday Park .City travelled to North Summit to face the Braves ; and the South Summit Wildcats in a dual match. This time it was Leavitt who had the best day for the Miners, pinning both his opponents. Birch lost a close match on points, then got the pin in his second test. Leavitt faced off at' 119 pounds with North Summit's Ovard in a tight match. Ovard got the opening takedown, but Leavitt countered coun-tered with a reversal. Then Ovard expanded his lead to |
