' "Yet the two buildings are significantly different in feeling: feel-ing: Snow Park is a more expansive building, designed as a large gabled form, its south facade open to views and sunlight. Silver Lake is more intimate, like a hunting lodge, with rooms which, though spacious, are self-contained. self-contained. This quality makes possible its use as a place for conferences and private gatherings desirable desir-able feature in a resort that plans to attract a year-found clientele. The American Wood Council, Coun-cil, an alliance of wood industry and trade organizations organiza-tions founded in 1969, conducts the awards program to recognize outstanding non-residential wood projects of distinctive design and to honor their architects, builders build-ers and owners. Out of 250 designs submitted submit-ted in the 1983 non-residential design awards program of the American Wood Council, the Snow Park and Silver Lake Lodges of Deer Valley took one of the 17 awards. The award went to the San Francisco architecture firm of Esherick Homsey Dodge & Davis, the architects of the Deer Valley structures. Cicely Reynolds of Esherick Esher-ick Homsey Dodge & Davis said the Snow Park and Silver Lake Lodges won an honor award, one of six given, she said, along with 11 various citations. She said the Wood Council looks for "combining the properties of wood with fine design." The Council appreciates appre-ciates simple designs, which let the woodwork speak for itself, she said. Native woods are the central feature of the Deer Valley complexes. In the documents nominating Snow Park and Silver Lake for the awards, Esherick Homsey Dodge & Davis said Western red cedar was used in the siding, Idaho white pine in the floors, Western red cedar and redwood in the walls, and Alaskan yellow cedar for. the decking and interior millwork. |
