Show Oktoberfest road race boasts fat prize list For those of you who would prefer to get in a bit of athletic activity along with your beer drinking at this year's Oktoberfest, mark Saturday, Sept. 17 on your calendar. That is the day of the Fifth Annual Oktoberfest Run, sponsored by the Prospector Athletic Club. And according to'Jeannine Carofanello, manager of the Athletic Club, the toiling runners of this year's race will be greeted by a nice assortment of prizes and other goodies at the finish line. To get to that finish line, runners will have to endure a five-mile course running up to the Park City Ski Area and back. The race will start and finish at the Athletic Club. Carofanello has lined up an impressive list of sponsors spon-sors for the race. "It's the most support and prizes we've ever had in the five years of running the event." she said. Both the Park City Ski Resort and ParkWest are sponsors. "The two resorts really came through," she said. Other sponsors are Wolfe's Sporting Goods, Miller, Pepsi, Pep-si, Janeaux's, the Claim-jumper, Claim-jumper, Pioneer Dodge of Salt Lake, KLCY radio, the Prospector Square Hotel, the, Grub Steak, and the White Pine Cross Country Touring Center. The top male and female runners will be able to turn their running prowess into skiing prowess in the winter. They will win season passes to ski at Park City. Awards for first, second, and third in the various divisions will be a day pass at ParkWest, a season pass to White Pine Touring Cener, and a day pass to the Prospector Athletic Club, respectively. Carofanello has also arranged for prize drawings to be taken from the runners' bib numbers. A weekend at the Prospector Square Hotel, various running run-ning items from Wolfe's, dinners from the Grub Steak, Janeaux's and the Claimjumper will be up for grabs. For those who plan to follow Oktoberfest tradition in replacing body fluids, Miller is furnishing free beer at the post-race gathering. Tamer runners can sip a free Pepsi. If the weather cooperates, the Grub Steak will have an ' outdoor barbecue following the race. After paying a small fee, race participants can wolf down the char-broiled char-broiled offerings. Carofanello expects her two Salt Lake sponsors, KLCY and Pioneer Dodge, to bring a good draw from Salt Lake. But she added, "We would like to see a lot of Park City runners." Runners interested in the Oktoberfest Run need to heed the following - the $5 entry en-try deadline is today at 5 p.m. at the Prospector Athletic Club. For the $5, the entrants get to run in the 11 a.m. race, and receive a T-shirt. But if procrastinating makes you happy, there will be late race registration right up until the start of the race. The late registration will only be $3, but will not include a T-shirt. Registration forms for Saturday's race can be picked up at the Athletic Club or at Wolfe's. |
