Show Varsity v-ball drops two, but The Park City girls' varsity volleyball team lost two matches to North Summit while the junior varsity var-sity won its only game at Coalville last week. The Braves scalped the varsity 15-7, 11-15, 15-8 in the first match and 15-12, 15-11 in the second match. But the sizzling Miner JVs won their third consecutive match with 15-10, 10-15 and 16-14 games over the Braves. Their 16-14 win probably was the most stirring victory for either the varsity or JV team all season. At one point, the JV Miners were down 14-4. Then freshman Dana Richman took the helm. Her precision preci-sion serves sliced through the Braves' defense and caused chaos in what had been a well-oiled machine. When the dust cleared, she rallied the Miners for 12 straight points and the victory. "I was a wreck," said Coach Kelly Walker. "When we were down 144, they (the Braves) went through five services without scoring a point and we didn't score on four of ours. "It's not as if we played well defensively. They just messed up their serves," she said. "Then Dana got the serve and she served straight through to 16. "I don't know how we did it, but we did." Walker said Holly Robinson passed pass-ed very well in the match and Brigette Price was hitting well. The coach said North Summit's varsity squad had a very good defense. "Few shots dropped. The ball just kept coming back. "We changed defenses in the second se-cond game of the first match because North Summit was hitting the ball way off the net," Walker said. "There was no need to have three forecourt players." The varsity team was hurt by the loss of Wendy Smith, who had to leave in the second match with a slight concussion, Walker said. Smith plays an important role on defense, she added, and was hurt when she was diving for a ball. The Miners were leading 10-4 when Smith was forced to leave. Jodi Olsen, who did not play last week, came on to do a respectable job on defense for the Miners. In the first game, Stacy Cofer's serving was strong, as 20 of the team's 30 points were scored on her service. She also recorded seven good hits. Erin Bolten contributed 14 . good hits and Theresa Lints played consistently and passed well defen- sively, said Walker. T In the second match, Cofer again was the impetus for 11 points while ' serving and she also recorded nine good hits. Christi Schlenski also was accurate while serving, as eight points were garnered while she was on duty. Walker said part of the problem in the losses was that the team was, "stuck in an awkward rotation in the first and third games, "We figured out where the bad rotation was and we're going to substitute through it next time," she said. The Miners played again Oct. 8 vs. 1 Union at Roosevelt, past the Park Record's deadline. , 1 -1 |
