Show Jayne can cure kids' summer blahs I It's summer, vacation time right? But you're only 12 years old and it's, like, totally boring around here. You are too old for day camp and all those grody arts and crafts classes, , but you can't go cruising or split for the lake 'cause you are too young to drive. It's the pits. 1 ' Well, not necessarily. At least one adult in Park City hasn't forgotten what it is like to be a teenager in a town run by, and for, grownups. Jayne Singer seems to know exactly what Park City's 11 to 14 year olds are going through: For the second summer in a row she is offering a cure for the what's-a-kid-to-do blues. Singer's Summer Pun program includes weekly excursions to Deer Creek and Rockport Reservoirs and four field trips to Salt Lake City. Each trip includes bus fare, entrance fees to the state parks, paddle boat and sailboard rentals and lessons-all lessons-all budget priced and geared to teenaged tastes, Singer said. The first trip to Deer Creek is scheduled for Friday, July 5. The bus will leave from the Treasure Mountain Middle School at 10 a.m. and will return at 4 p.m. Rafts and paddle boats will be available. The cost is $1 per person. On Fridays beginning July 11, Singer's group will be on a bus bound for Rockport Reservoir, where Robbie Flatt of Summit Sailboards will be waiting with sailboards, life jackets and certified instructors. Youngsters who are new to the sport will start out first on a dry land simulator and then on tethered boards. "It is a very safe program and there will be lots of supervision," supervi-sion," Singer said. The $10 fee includes transportation transporta-tion from Park City (at 8:30 a.m.), entrance to the park, board rentals, lessons and the use of a iifejacket. "It is a great deal and everyone age 11 and up is welcome to come along," Singer said. The first field trip to Raging Waters in Salt Lake City took place last week, but the next trip to the Cottonwood Heights Pool is scheduled sche-duled for Tuesday, July 9. The bus will leave from the Treasure Mountain Middle School at 10 a.m. and will return at 4 p.m. The cost is $1.50. On Tuesday, July 23 there will be a day trip to Super Sliders in Salt Lake City. The bus will leave at 9:30 a.m. The cost is $7.50. The grand finale of the season will be a day at Lagoon, Singer said. The bus will leave at 10 a.m. and return at 6 p.m. The fee is $10 per person. Advance reservations are requested request-ed but not necessary. For more information call the Park City Recreation Department, 649-9461. The program ends Aug. 30, but until then, "There will be something for the kids to do every week, all summer long," Singer said. |
