Show Folk artist wins Governor's Award Nina Grimes, whose quilts are part of the "Made in Utah" exhibit currently on display at the Kimball Art Center, has been given the second annual Governor's Award for Folk Art. For the past two years, the award has been given to the person who has made the most significant contribution con-tribution to Utah's cultural heritage through the practice prac-tice of a traditional art form. According to members of the Utah Arts Council, Grimes' quilts fulfill that requirement beautifully. Mrs. Grimes, who has been practicing her art in Utah for 24 years, employs a number of traditional techniques including Seminole piecing, Teneriffe embroidery em-broidery and shadow trapunto. She has also pioneered an easier way to make the traditional cathedral window win-dow pattern and has incorporated some contemporary methods with antique designs. In addition to quilted bedspreads, Grimes has designed a variety of wall hangings, table coverings and articles of clothing. Nina Grimes' quilts and other examples of traditional Utah folk art will be on exhibit in the Kimball Kim-ball Art Center's Little Gallery through Sept. 13. |
