Show Ryan's shocks Penn West, Jan's faces tough final week in men's softball Seven runs crossed the plate on singles by Lynn Burgener, Cory Provost, Jerry Johnson, Greg "Cakes" Winn, Harold Barnes, and. Matt Morse, plus a homer by third baseman Lou Berry. Ryan's picked and pecked for a few runs here and there, but that second inning was too much to come back from. Jans Mountain Outfitters wins by forfeit over P.C.M.C. Jans Mountain Outfitters 9, Just Razor's Bums 4 Again the top of the order for Jans, Larry Goodings, Val Provencio, Randall "the Hamster" Hanskat, and Norm Smith produced well in this Friday night game at City Park. Those four batsmen accounted for seven of the nine Jans runs. Goodings had two singles and one RBI, Provencio two singles and a stolen base, Hanskat a single and a homer and five RBIs, and Smith a triple and one RBI. The seventh" run school, and was on the verge of spurting for the runs which would give them the game over rival Penn West. In the top of the fourth Scott "Fatback" Richards led off with a single, John Thompson walked, then Gary Avise came to the plate and belted his second triple of the game. Ken Tedford followed, singled, and later scored to total four runs. Penn West could only manage a meek one run in its half of the inning. Score 71 after four. Doc's added three in the top of the fifth on a single by recent returnee Vinnie Buonadonna, and doubles by Fatback and Rick Rodriguez. Penn West was shut out. Score 10-1 after five. In the sixth both teams added two, then Doc's added another in the top of the seventh to put the score at 13-3 going into the bottom of the inning. Max Rosenseld, Ross Bampton, and Sam Circo got hits and scored, but the rest of the Stockbrokers were out to lunch. 13-6 final. P.C.A boys rallied for eight of their own to narrow the margin to 20-17. Three Coconut runs in the top of the seventh cinched the game, the Accommodators coming up with four of their own, but falling two short of what was needed. 23-21. Whew : Iecr Valley wins bv forfeit over P.C.M.C. Ryan's 2(1, Penn W est 1 1 This was the shocker of the season so far. as the Ryan's squad, which can play in quite the hapless state at times, demolished the Penn West crew with ease. The score of 20 -14 was deceptive because at one point after five innings Ryan's was close to mercying Penn West 18-8! This game really started in the third with Ryan's leading 1-0. Evan Williams led off with a single up the middle, then two errors by the Penn West shortstop allowed Allen Winchester and Brian Beck on board. Then Brent Campbell ' smacked a double, Dana Williams a by Randy Hanskat Well, it's down to the home stretch in the men's softball league, as the regular season ends Aug. 8. But nothing is wrapped up at this point. Penn West was the whipping boy of the week. Once-lowly Ryan's relished the reversed roles Monday night, and came within three runs of mercying (defeating by 15 runs) the once-mighty Penn West team before ending up with a 20-14 win. That was the second loss in a week for the Stockbrokers; Doc's had mashed them the previous Friday night. Penn West was once brazenly sitting atop the men's league, having vanquished usual stalwarts such as Jans, Doc's, and the Coconuts. But since those lofty days it has been nothing but a slip down the standings. The Stockbrokers now sit in fourth place in the 10 team league. Jans picked up two wins on the week, one by forfeit over P.C.M.C, and the other in a fairly easy win over Just Razor's Bums. But this week will be the test for the current first place team they faced the Coconuts last night (press time precluded coverage), and will battle Doc's Friday night. Only if Jans loses both will the team's playoff hopes be in jeopardy. If Jans win both the teams will clinch first place and an opening round bye in the crossed on Robo Svoboda's sacrifice fly. The Bums, on the other hand, had little production from any part of their lineup. Aldo "Cella" Jacobson had the best evening for the Bums, going four for four (singles) and scoring once. Coconuts 23, P.C. Accommodations 21 This was a slugfest of gargantuan proportions. Take a look at some of the totals four homers, five triples, 10 doubles, 36 singles. Gadzooks, Batman ! Since this writer can see no errors in the scorebook, he is assuming that many were committed but were counted as hits, which distorts those totals; but nonetheless, a massive night of run production! Names of the home run slammers will be mentioned in this space; to go any further would be suicide! Paul Lamphier of the Coconuts pounded two homers, while teammate Dan Pintklute had one. Larry Spurgeon of the Accommodators had one. Both teams started out the first in more typical fashion, scorelessly. But in the top of the second the Coconuts dumped in five, followed by zero for the Accommodators. In the third the Coconuts added two, the Accommodators three. In the fourth the Coconuts could only manage one, but the Accommodators were primed and ready for bear. They mashed in six. At that point it was 9-8 Accommodators. Then in the fifth it was the Coconuts' turn, scoring nine unanswered runs to take a 17-9 lead. In the sixth they added three, but the single, and Brook Berrett a three-run three-run homer to swell the score to 6-0. Penn West came back for five of their own, but Ryan's countered in the top of the fourth with five more, accented by a towering two-run blast by Dana Williams. Penn West only managed two. Score 11-6. Then in the fifth Ryan's shut the door on the stylishly dressed Penn West mob, scoring eight runs on eight hits to push the tally to 18-8 after five. Later, with darkness encroaching, the advantage fell to Penn West in the bottom of the seventh, as a couple of the Ryan's outfielders had a tough time seeing the ball. But they just teased the Stockbrokers, giving them four runs befor rudely shutting the door. 20-14 final. Just Arnie's 21, Mad Hatters !) This Monday night makeup of an earlier scheduled game ended the women's season in the usual way, with Just Arnie's whipping the Mad Hatters. Just Arnie's started off fast, scoring nine in the first inning, as the Hatters were searching for a bomb shelter. From there on this was no ball game. Thus Just Arnie's finished the season with a perfect 9-0 record, while the next closest team, the Hatters, fell to 5-4. playoffs. Penn West is now dependent on others, its destiny in the hands of Jans. If the Coconuts beat Jans then Penn West will be virtually out of it, but if Jans wins the Coconuts and Penn West will be tied for third with four losses apiece. Don't go away, this thing is going into the bottom of the ninth! Doc's 12, End Run 9 The closeness of this game last Wednesday, July 25 shows how these two teams have changed, the End Run coming up, while Doc's has lagged back a bit. Last year Doc's mercied the End Run in both of their meetings. The Runs started off true to their name with three in the bottom of the first. A single by Mac McDonough, a walk to Richie Urie, a triple by Dan Gruner, and singles by Pat Galloway and Kevin James were enough to bring in three. Doc's tied it up in the top of the second on hits by Jon Thompson, Tim "the Razor" Sharp, and Ken Tedford.- Then Doc's went up by three in the top of the third 6-3, and added three more in the top of the fourth to make it 9-3. But the Runs were in a fighting mood and scored four runs to close it to 9-7. However, Razor, Tedford, Pete Harris, and Ron Shultz calmly came up for Doc's in the top of the sixth, however, and slapped in three more runs to make it 12-7. The Runs countered with two from Randy Klarberg and company, but it wasn't enough, as the game had to be called after six because of time. Deer Valley 16, Ryan's 5 Deer Valley is surely the best of the rest of the men's league, following the front runners. The team has many a close call which has kept it from being in contention, but has a strong core. The second inning against Ryan's demonstrated that. End Run 14, Ryan's 11 This Friday "bar wars" game was a humdinger, according to the brothers of Trout fame. It started off with the Runs of End slapping five runs in the first, accented by a monstrous homer by Danny Grant. Ryan's then returned the favor on a double by Kent Niederhauser, a single and a stolen base by the fleetfooted Dana Williams, a single by Brian Beck, and a single by Don Ruffatto. The runs were put down in the top of two, and Alan Winchester of Ryan's unevened the score in their half of the inning with a two RBI home run. The Runs added one of their namesakes in the top of the third, but Ryan's crossed two to make the score 9-6 Ryan's. But the Runs shut down the Trout in the fourth and fifth innings, to give themselves the offensive advantage. That universally-feared monster of the Midway, Kevin James, scored two runs in those two innings. In the fourth he spanked a single and later scored on a double by Dan Gruner. Then he mashed a fine spank in the fifth for four bags. It was a five-hit game for James. After the scoring spree, the Runs led 11-9 through five. But then Ryan's choked out the End Run offense in the top of the sixth, and scored one of their own on a single by Brent Zambell. Zambell got on, stole second, and then moved home on two sacrifice flies. 11-10 through six. The Runs applied more pressure in the top of the seventh, scoring three, and that was enough to hold off the spunky Ryan's crew. Brook Busset scored in the bottom' of the inning, but that was all that could be managed. Final 14-11 Runs.
