Show t , i- Monticello Falls in Quarterfinak Miners Face Unbeaten Kanab in Playoffs Friday i ' Nephi, Kanab had two chances to show off. The first game was a tight 36-28 Cowboy win. But on the rebound later this season, Kanab coasted to a 45-23 victory. Hafen sees his game plan as nothing more than what the Cowboys have been doing all season. The Kanab offense features split halfbacks half-backs and double tight ends. It runs a wingback either tight, or split as a wide receiver. It mies its plays. Please turn to page 5B i Speed, speed and more f speed. I That would be a fair way to i describe the Kanab High I School football team. It is ! fast and it scores lots of I points, often in a very short t period of time at the ? beginning of its games. ! Which presents a problem for the Park City Miner I football team. I The Miners have drawn the I unenviable task of trying to What is the secret behind the Cowboy's success? Burns knows its team speed. "They have eight people on that team who set state track and field records as juniors," he said. Cowboy halfback Eric Brown was the second place finisher for all state divisions in the high school version of the decathalon last spring. All of this clearly has Burns worried. That ball game stood as a scoreless tie at the end of regulation. From there it took a Park City pass interception on Monticello' s overtime bid Jrom the 10 yard line, and a roughing the kicker penalty against the Buckaroos on a missed field goal attempt by Miner kicker Craig Griffen. It was that penalty that gave Park City four more downs from the Monticello C TN -mSST W 7 blemish Kanab's perfect 9-0 season record Friday in a state 1-A playoff semifinal at noon in Richfield. Park City coach Bob Burns has a simple basis for his game plan. "Pray," said Burns, when asked how to bottle - up the Cowboy offense. of-fense. It's an offense that Kanab coach Arlyen Hafen modestly, modest-ly, almost in an embarrassed tone, explains has averaged "around 50 points a game," despite the facC "we substitute substi-tute early." "We're going to be sitting on pins and needles," Burns said, "because. they can score from anyplace on the field on any play." The Cowboys struck from 80 to 90 yards in one game this season. Burns said Ke expects the Miners can throw against Kanab, but not unless quarterback Tom Flinders gets the needed time to find his mark. Flinders had a dismal outing in the Miners' wild overtime win against Monticello last week. five yard line and set up the winning touchdown by fullback full-back Tim Tebbs. Taking that game as a comparison, the Miners struggled to drop Monticello which was blasted by 2-A San Juan of Blanding. Well, Kanab played San Juan. "We substituted early in that one," Hafen said. The Cowboys blew San Juan away 42-6. More bad news: Against Beaver, which is favored in the other 1-A semifinal against South Summit at More Football... Continued from Page IB Hafen says the Cowboys have passed the ball about half the time. The rest of the time, the Kanab backs can be seen, often from behind, on the tail end of veer options, inside dives and pitch outs. Defensively, the Miners will look at a changing 4-4, 5-2 lineup that features what Hafen calls a "monster" back thrown to the strong side of the Miners' offense. "We run a variety of stunts (blitzes) and like to make things happen," the Kanab coach said. Park City, meanwhile, is healthy and Hafen sees the Miners' best weapon as a hot throwing Flinders, who could burn the Kanab defense underneath its deep coverage, cover-age, if the Miner line gives him the time. The Kanab defensive front averages slightly more than 170 pounds - comparable to Park City. Its largest lineman is a i90 pound senior tackle, Hafen said. He also said, however, that Kanab has the quickest line he has ever coached, some of its members mem-bers being starting basketball basket-ball players. Miner success could hinge on a zero-turnover effort tied to at least two long drives for scores that consume the one thing Kanab needs to operate oper-ate its scoring machine: time. The ballgame will be broadcast live from Richfield by KPCW. The winner will move to Rice Stadium at the University Univer-sity of Utah for a crack at either Beaver of South Summit. The last time Park City faced Kanab was in 1980 at Richfield in the playoffs. The Miners won lo-6. |
