Show Bountiful Builder I l i t HARVEY DA DAY V SR By DONA PRICE The past and present of I Bountiful are linked together by some of our citizens Mr Harvey Day Sr one of our oldest Bountiful residents is the first of these people that we will feature as Builders of Bountiful WHEN I THINK of Mr Harvey Harvey Harvey Har Har- vey Day Sr in my mind I picture a man tall and straight with white hair a shovel in his hand and a long long longhaired longhaired haired faithful dog at his his' heels He has always been Grampa Day to many of the neighborhood children that grew up around him As you passed his home he would always stop you to show you something special he had grown in his garden In Mr Days Day's youth the roads of town were dirt I I horses drawing buggies buggi s sleighs and wagons were the means of transportation Homes were scarce here in the valley and viewing it from the mountain top you would see a beautiful green and and yel yel low patchwork of farms A LIFE UFE LONG resident of Bountiful Mr Day was born to James and Mary Ann Roberts Roberts Roberts Rob Rob- erts Day February 8 1878 in their stone and log home lo located located located lo- lo at 90 North East He was one of eight boys and four girls The Bountiful American Legion Post is named after his brother George R R. Day who was killed in the first world war MR DAYS DAY'S father James Day was a fine musician and conducted an orchestra in Bountiful for 50 years Mary Ann Day his mother was a sister to B. B H H. H Roberts She immigrated to Utah from England Eng Eng- land Mr Harvey Day met Josephine Josephine Josephine Jose Jose- phine F F. F Huntsman of Farmington Farmington Farmington Farm- Farm ington at a Lagoon dance They were married in the Salt Lake temple April 30 1902 She passed away November 23 1963 IN 1902 Mr Day built his new bride a home at the corner corner corner cor cor- ner of North and Orchard Drive His home has always been a place of beauty The crocus blooming in the spring were as carefully cultivated and cared for as were his prize gladiolas Seven children were born in this home They were Leone Hess Salt Lake City Alton Harvey Jr Stanley Melvin and Virginia Hadley of Bountiful and Wesley of ofEl ofEl ofEl El Cerrito California Itis It Itis Itis is interesting to note that Alton Harvey Jr and Stanley Stanley Stanley Stan Stan- ley all have their homes on property once farmed by the Day family Virginia is living I in the family home Harvey Day began his music career at the age of eight playing in a Martial Band made up of boys ages eight through 12 organized by his Grandmother Ann Dus Dustin in and conducted by Ebeneezer Beesley He was taught to play the organ at at this early age by his aunt At the age of 18 he organized organized organized organ- organ and conducted a martial martial martial mar mar- band of 60 boys He was a member of many bands and orchestras throughout through through- out his life including Bountiful ful Silver Band and the Will White Band Mr Day was wasa a avery avery very versatile man when it came to music He played several instruments well including the cornet fife drum organ and piano He also directed and conducted many musicals and operas throughout the valley THE BOUNTIFUL natives will always remember the outstanding job he did conducting conducting conducting con con- ducting and singing in the Bountiful First Ward Choir Farming his ten acre farm was always a pleasure to him and he is noted for raising the first wheat in Bountiful He served the Stone Creek Irrigation Company as Water Master for many years Stone Creek water and a canal that ran north and south at about East were the only irrigation sources for all North Boun Boun- residents in past years before the Weber Basin Other jobs held by Mr Day were at the Layton sugar factory Hill Field and a merchant Police in Salt Lake City MR ibm DAYS DAY'S family has al always always always al- al ways been a joy and a pleasure to him Melvin served our country in in the second world war and andis andis andis is now employed with the First Security Bank in Salt Lake City ALTON AND Harvey Jr retired from Cudahy Company when the plant closed down Stan has painted and decorated decorated decorated decor decor- many homes in the val val- ley Wesley is a musician and teaches organ and piano Vir Virginia inia is presently em at a trading post in Salt Lake City She has been living at the family home taking care of her father for forthe forthe forthe the past few years LEONE is a homemaker The branches on the Harvey Day family tree are filled with 16 grandchildren 30 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren MR m. HARVEY DAY and his family have been a real asset assetto to the building of Bountiful through culture farming and industry and will be long remembered remembered remembered re re- re- re here Because of ill health the thelast thelast thelast last few years he is being cared for at the Beverly Manor Man Man- or Rest Home in Salt Sal t Lake City |
