Show . Editorial Apparently the city in its wisdom has given up attempting to seek justice in the halls of the State Capitol. If what was said by City Managei Arlene Loble. Mayor Jack Green and Cdiincilwoman Tina Lewis at Tuesday s ChamberBureau board meeting is any indication, it's up to the bar, club and restaurant owners of the city to figure out a way to raise revenue in lieu of the yet-to-be-passed (but apparently already decided upon by the rity) beer tax. It was "blame it on the Legislature" time in a meeting room at the Park City Racquet Club, listening to Lewis talk about how the city has '.'cut all unnecessary spending,' when police officers are walking around town with gilded business cards that even bank presidents don't buy in these tight times. And, of course, there is the new city logo, a classy item that has cost thousands in new stationary. Our wonderful free bus svstem is another status symbol in the battle against Vail. Aspen. Jackson Hole and Sun Valley. But it is a drain. We want to see the city have the right to raise revenue from the tourists, but watching Loble, Green and Lewis tell the Chamber that poor Park City can't win at the Legislature was disheartening. Perhaps the state doesn't want to project the image of being a destination resort area. Fine. If that's the case, we will never compete against the towns Park Citv is attempting to compete against now. But that's not the fault of some person' who is being taxed because he or she likes a glass of beer. It's unfair, and there is no argument against that. What Park City is doing by taking advantage of a discriminatory law that was passed 50 vears ago, is telling a lot of people that if you drink, your different - and you are going to pav. . . ; 5 ' It is not so much the money, it is the. aura of ;p!aingirito the.,, hands of the closed-minded people who passed that law . allowing this beer tax. How CanTarCity claim to be a haven where, out-of-state tourists don't "have" to be treated like they are in the 19th Centura, when- Park City" is about to take a step in that direction itself? This tax is a cheap, quick fix that will raise little revenue, but a lot of tempers; -Itan'tbe worth it. - |
