Show Commuters to Organize Pool System The commuter woes of Park City employees may decrease significantly if a van pooling system is established here. A large percentage of the city's workforce is required to commute to Salt Lake City because of high housing costs, and a group of commuters are attempting to organize a transportation system between the two cities. Jan Sylvester, director of Mt. Metro buslines, is lending her expertise to the commuters in coordinating the project. Sylvester has scheduled a public hearing for Friday, April 10 for persons interested in van pooling. Robert Perry, the state Department of Transportations coordinator for van pooling has been invited to the hearing to answer questions concerning the organization of a commuter system. Though the system has not been set up,, Sylvester envisions a fleet of six vans delivering commuters to and from Salt Lake City at various times during the morning and evening. By participating in the program, Sylvester said commuters should save a substantial amount of money in fuel and maintenance costs on their own vehicle. he anticipates the total cost to the commuter would be $100 per year, wheh she notes is a "tremendous financial savings." But undertaking the task of forming a commuter service will not be easy. Sylvester explained. "It is going to take cooperation." she said. "You have to plan it an coordinate it to make it work.." But the bus director is confident the plan will work. "There is no reason why it can't", she said. Sylvester cited several methods of organizing the commuter system, but she emphasized one particular way. People interested in pooling with other commuters, she said, could form a private, non-profit organization for the purpose of van pooling. Sylvester and others interested in establishing the commuter service will work with the Chamber of Commerce, businesses and employees who wish to participate. She Urges all interested 'commuters to attend the hearing next Friday. The hearing is tentatively set for 5 p.m. at the Memorial Building. |
