Then with less than a minute left in the half, Higham latteralled to Kip Please Turn to Page 2B The Mighty Miners continued con-tinued to thrash their preseason pre-season opponants last Friday afternoon , with a crashing 40-7 victory over the East Carbon Vikings. The victory which was the highlight of Park Hrgh's Spirit Week, and Homecoming Homecom-ing Celebration, warmed the , hearts of loyal alums and gave the Miners greater confidence for their season, opener against North Summit Sum-mit this Friday. - . -. Park City, which remains undefeated in pre-season play, began their first scoring drive on their own 30 -after; Marty Cowin sacked the East Carbon Quarterback on a fourth down play. , Fighting to get out "of the hole, MinerQuarterback Jim Higham handed off to Halfback Kip Foote for a gain of nine, and .then to . Fullback Dave Eley for the first down. Higham ran himself on the next down for a gain of four. He then called on Eley who took the ball on the fake, swept around the end and ran for 40 yards to the Viking. 40 for another first down. , " ' Foote advanced the ball to the 35 where the Miners were stalled . by East Carbon's Car-bon's defense. Faced with a fourth down and 10 situation after a penalty, Higham went to the air, completing a short pass to Foote, who ran to the 18 for the first down, A hand-off to Eley brought the ball to the 14 and Mark .Uriarte further improved Park City's position, carrying, it to the 10. Uriarte ran again to the 3 for, another first down and on the next play advanced further, to the Vi:yard line. Jim' Higham then:, went over East, Carbon's Car-bon's line for the touchdown. An on-target kick,by Higham added another point! making it 7-0 with 3:38 remaining in the first quarter, . . Taking .the ball on their own , five after a booming kick-off by Jim Higham, the Vikings advanced tfie ball to the. 25 before being forced to punt by the powerful Miner defense. . A weak kick by the Viking punter left Park City with good field position on their own 45. On the first play of , Park City's possession, Foote took the hand-off from Higham, found a hole, and ran 56 yards for the second Park City touchdown. The snap however went over Higham's head on the conversion attempt but Park City was comfortably out in front 13 to 0, at thend of the first period; Again, East Carbon was held deep within their own territory, and. forced to punt from the 10. The ball went . straight up moving only about ten yards down fiejd, giving , Park City excellent position on the Viking 20. Foote advanced the ball to the 15, then Dave Eley took the hand-off and ran around the end for the third Park City, touchdown. Again, the snap went over - Higham's head during the point-after-kick attempt and, Park City had to settle for 6, placing them in front 19 to 0. . Several plays later, Park . City was again in East Carbon territory after the Vikings were forced to punt from deep within their own side. -Taking the ball on the 40, Dave Eley quickly ran to the 35 and again to the 32. This time the kick was good, giving the Miners a comfortable comfort-able 32 to 0 lead at halftime. During the second half, Coach Bob Burns played second string offense and defense teams which added 8 more points to Park City's side of the scoreboard. Park City scored early in the second half, capitalizing on good field position after another feeble East Carbon punt. Taking the ball on the Viking 35, Steve Toly quickly advanced to the 27. Then Quarterback Bill Tatomer handed off to Troy Packard who ran 27 yards for the score. Toly took the ball for the 2-point running conversion conver-sion and went in to add two more points to Park City's score, making it 40-0. Late in the half, East Carbon took possession of Park City's 45 after recover- ..... , ing a fumble. The old flea-flicker flea-flicker brought the Vikings to the 7 and within good scoring range. At this point, Coach Burns brought out Park City's first string defense for a goal line stand. Somehow, East Carbon penetrated the line and went in to score. The play was clouded with controversy, however, because be-cause of an obvious Viking violation which the referees failed to call. A heated discussion erupted between the ref and Bob Burns which immediately led to the Park City Coach being ejected from the game. With their Coach inthe locker room; Park City wasn't about to give up any more points to the Vikings, and when the whistle blew, the Miners were clearly the victors at 40 to 7. The season opener against North Summit begins Friday, September 21 at 7:30pm under the lights of Coalville. |
