The student can never make up the whole 10 points, but can make up 5 points by doing any odd jobs.. If the students don't keep at least 60 points they will not be able to participate in any school activities such as Lagoon Day, Field Day, dances, special days or assemblies assem-blies we have. We hope that it will work well and be very successful, and hope each student will keep at least 60 points! Go for the Gold by Amy Irvine On March 2, Park- City School District busses will pull up into the Park City Resort parking ' lot Middle School students of various classrooms and ski abilities will lumber down off these busses, dragging drag-ging their equipment with them.'r-v As they near the top of the1 run named Clementine,- the tension increases, as they gaze down upon the challenging challeng-ing course. The Middle School Challenge Cup is soon to begin. With lessons and training given by the instructors of the , Resort, the students. feel that they are now prepared to attempt the course. Snow and weather conditions are anticipated antici-pated to be good, though the ruts will be a major drawback draw-back to the young contenders. There are two categories; pro and amateur. Racers with previous experience will race pro, and amateur will be open to those with no racing background. back-ground. It ' is expected to be about a 30 second course, with technical electric timing for exact times. After the race, an obstacle course will be held at the : bottom of the run. Collin McComb , and Tommy James. The builders explained how the UFO- was justs sculpted put of snow and how it" was to be entered into the 5th grade snow sculpturing contest. The, constructors surely did have confidence in their project and their confi-denc confi-denc held out because they wpn First Prize (a bag of catidy). ' 'The second place winner was a VW car made by Dusty Mandrell and Lance Nelson. They thought their sculpture should have won, but they were happy about placing second. Well,- Miriam, we jiope you can , make alU your dreams com true, ; t Cliff Skiing " by Ricky Williams Cliff Long, age 11 , born in " Salt Lake City Feb. 4, 1969,, has made 5th Grade Student of the Week this week in the Middle School. -Cliff lives on the Old Ranch. Road with Eric, his ten year old brother, his mother, a riursQ, and" his father, a construction worker. KCliff likes ' sports. His; hobbies are skiing, football,-swimming football,-swimming and soccer. His favorite hobby is skiing. But he likes being on the 12 and Under competition soccer team too. He also likes to listen to music. His favorite song is "Renegade" played by his favorite group Styx. Cliff is" no exception to the' average middle school student, when it comes to favorite movies. "Star Wars" is his " D.J., Michael Kane from KRSP, was there with all ,of his sound system equipment and flashing lights. This dance was a great success. There was a refreshment refresh-ment stand and a wishing well with dry ice in it. Michael Kane gave out 45 rpm records, KRSP bumper stickers and he even had a dance contest. The three finalists were Ricky Williams and Tori Pillinger, 'Marc Porter and Jody Mandrell Man-drell and Sean Krajeski and Mindy McMillian. The winners win-ners were Marc Porter and Jody Mandrell. They got a record album for their prize. The behavior of the students stud-ents was excellent throughout the night's activities. Thank you! Bees are helpful to us, but we sometimes misinterpret misinter-pret their , presence on the earth. As they fly by, we scream or run away because they frighten us. Of course, irjsect bees aren't the pnly lands of bees in the world. ' Going Strong . by Kim Robinson Going for her 264th hour of playing monopoly with her family is Miriam Hamilton, this week's Eighth Grade Student of the Week. Miriam tries to beat her mother Von, her father Paul and her sister Connie. Miriam's Mir-iam's mother is her own boss . ahd operates her own computer comput-er right at home. Her father also works for himself as a carpenter. Connie is an 1 1 th grade student at Park City High School. ;i v Miriam knows how she wants to do it up, live it up, and rap it up in six easy steps. She knows what she wants in life. For instancc'she wants to go to Switzerland and ski the Alps. ' If she could have it her way, we'd all be living on the planet Jupiter. Her favorite part of the day would be lunch . On the menu would be hot and spicy things such as tacos and burritor; to top the spicy stuff would be a cool, refreshing Tab cola and a cherry pie. You can't say she's not a typical 13 , year old. Miriarm wouldn't mind at all if the only teachers in her life were Mrs. Southcrlin and Mrs. Vance. Lookout ski patrol, your in for a big surprise when Miriam passes the test to be one. The Girl Who Loves Horses by David Van Luven A horse gallops silently through the meadows of a dream. To the beat of a guitar it runs with a lone rider upon its back. Slowly, the dream fades- away and the rider is back in her room. She looks at1 her algebra book, smiles, and continues on with the pro- blems. This student is Mary Savage, Sav-age, the Eighth Grade Student of the Week. ; Finishing her work , she runs down some stairs, brushing past one of her ,six brothers on her way. She sees her mother and asks where her father is. Learning that he is at work at the Salt Lake Tribune, she returns to her room t o practice her guitar. As she begins to play, she is again on her dream horse, riding into the sunset. Successful Night by Sheila Hannay At night when the faculty goes homes, the school is left dark and quiet but the night of the 22nd was different. From 7:00 till 10:00. the gym was full of music and students '. .dancing' and having fun. The w w a s III . possiblly be just as important as honey bees. Thev are verv helpful in learning the complicated compli-cated spelling rules of our English language. They are very similar to the insect bees, as' the competition can be scary. Our 8th graders have a very probable chance of representing represent-ing our school in the State competition. On Thursday. March 6, an 8th Grade Spelling Be.e will be, held to determine the four finalists that will compete against four students from each other grade in the school finals, w hich will be held a week later. The one super speller that stands alone at the end of our school competition' will go to the State Bee in SLC and will-be given a free book with many, many difficult words in it to study for the finals. Keep It Up bv Susan Bovle When passing by or visiting the Middle School, you might see someone shoveling snow, cleaning the halls or doing any odd jobs that need worked on. Who do you think it is? Well, it's not the janitor: it may be any student from our school. . Middle School has started a new program that will maybe help keep the students in line. In this' policy, every student starts out with 100 points.
