Show 'Ski For Life' The Utah Heart Association's Associa-tion's first annual "Ski For Life" is an effort to encourage all Utahns to make fitness a year-round endeavor. Ski for Life involves two free cross country skiing clinics and a 5 kilometer race tour at Wasatch Mountain State Park March 22 sponsored sponsor-ed by Utah Heart and Sunset Sports. "We hope that Utahns of all ages and fitness levels can be active during the winter by participating in America's fastest growing -winter sport. . . cross country skiing," says Milt Hokanson, Ski for Life Committee Chairman who is a special customer service rep for Utah Power and Light Co. Ski for Life is being patterned' after the Heart Association's highly successful success-ful "Run For Life," an event last May that served as a catalyst for the dramatic increase in running in this area. "The Heart Assn. stresses fitness as the best possible preventive medicine and we are confident that Ski For Life will be as successful as Run For Life. People will find that cross country skiing is easy to learn and is a good form of exercise for runners and non-runners non-runners alike," sayd Mr. Hokanson. Honorary co-chairmen for Ski For Life are Salt Lake Mayor Ted Wilson and KUTV personality Craig Wirth. Mayor May-or Wilson is a top runner and cross country skier who has long advocated outdoor exercise. exer-cise. Mr. Wirth say's he's always appreciated the research re-search and community efforts of the Heart Assn. because it supplied him with free penicillin peni-cillin for a heart ailment as a youngster. The first clinic sponsored by Sunset Sports was Sat., March 1 at Brighton Touring Center. The' second clinic, sponsored by Brighton Touring Center, will be March 8 at the Brighton facility in Big Cottonwood Cotton-wood Canyon. Free equipment will be available for Ski For Life registrants. " Between 500 and 1,000 participants' are expected for the March 22 five kilo-meter kilo-meter race tour at Wasatch Mountain State Park near Heber and Midway in Wasatch Wa-satch County. Skiers of all ability levels can race or simply enjoy the winter majesty of the Heber Valley, There will be awards in 12 divisions. . . - Registration for Ski For Life begins March 1 at the first clinic and at all six Sunset Sports locations. The $3 registration fee includes the free clinics, the racetour and a Ski For Life bandana. Ski For Life participants can also register at the Utah Heart Assn., 250 East 1st South, and at Brighton Touring Center. Sunset Sports is co-sponsoring Ski For Life because it knows exercise can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular cardio-vascular disease.;. America's 1 killer... according to Sunset cross country coordinator Pete Clark. "Cross country skiing is a great form of exercise and is much less expensive than downhill skiing... particularly with. the price of gasoline and lift tickets jumping," says Mr. Clark. Ski For Life participants are being asked to seek pledges for each kilometer skied, according to Mr. Hokanson. "We hope to raise a great deal of money to be used for heart research right here in Utah. Skiers will have the incentive of earning prize cert ifica tes good for some very nice cross country skiing items," he says.
