Helen, wife and partner to Man, also studied at the University of Colorado and the University of Utah and adds to her awesome list of achievements, achieve-ments, a Fulbright scholarship lo study in Australia for 18 months, the honors of graduating gradu-ating from UC as Phi Beta Kappa Suma cum laude, as well as a masters thesis in Plant Ecology. Helen was named the outstanding graduate gradu-ate student the year she received her masters from the University of Utah. During their early years of marriage and child rearing, Matt and Helen were tempted by a friend to open a ski shop in Park City, a mining town similar to the one they grew up in. Matt' had worked as an engineer in Los Angeles for a year and was eager to return (o the mountains, outdoor recreation, and four distinct seasons. In 1964 the Alvarez' established the Timberhaus in i he buidling formerly occupied by the famous "Mrs. Foster's Matt and Helen Alvarez With the philosophy that "quality is not old fashioned," one of Park City's longest established businesses demonstrates dem-onstrates the attitude and commitment. ..a traditional in Park City's history. Matt and Helen Alvarez, owner's of the Timberhaus Ski and Rental Shops, have contributed to the growth and development of Park Citv for 16 vears. and . possess the unique ability to anticipate the communities future with a special perspec tive. Matt, a skiing enthusiast during his" college days at the University of Colorado, was surprised to learn that Utah was more than a desert when he came to ski at Solitude in 1959. An immediate convert to the powder and the convenience conven-ience of Utah ' skiing. Matt transferred to the University of Utah and graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering. engi-neering. The inventory at Timberhaus has expanded to a complete line of ski clothing and equipment, rental shop laiilities. and "all season" sportswear. Park City means more to Mat t and Helen than Tim-berhaus. Tim-berhaus. Active in community affairs, each has taken his or her turn in city government. Matt served as the 1st president of the Chamber of Commerce and the city's second Planning Commission- ' ci Helen is currently serving as Councilwoman. with special concern and commitment to preserving the "atmosphere" ol Park City, maintaining the : family and home environment . which the residents enjoy, and preserving public areas and improving services.
