J s r 4 veep f iT r N V r f 0 r. r of t.- t. t V l TREAT FOR YOUNG PEOPLE I The Princess and the Pea the opening 69 1968 presentation presenta presenta- tion by the University of Utah's Pioneer Theatre for Young People People People Peo Peo- will be performed at 4 pm p.m. Friday Oct 25 at Viewmont High School auditorium under the sponsorship of the Bountiful Young Peoples People's Theater Asso Asso- THE PLAY adapted from the famous tale by Hans Christian Christian Christian Chris Chris- tian Andersen concerns the search for a suitable wife for a year 22 old prince whose prime concern even at that late age is collecting butterflies The Pioneer Theatre version however contains some departures departures departures de de- de- de from Andersen's classic classic classic clas clas- sic story since it was adapted for this production by Vern Adix who is supervising director director director tor for the Us U's Pioneer Theatre for Young People I DECIDED to bring it up to date date a a little Mr Adix smiles His updating involves work with the characters not a basic tampering with the story But it should provide a lot that is of interest to today's young peo peo- As those who recall the original original original nal story will remember the King invites the kings of surrounding surrounding surrounding sur sur- rounding countries to send their daughters to participate in a contest the winner to be married married married mar mar- ried to the Prince THE TilE CONTEST includes competition in cooking singing and dancing The final and seemingly impossible test is for sensitivity The winning princess princess princess prin prin- cess must be so sensitive that she is able to detect the presence presence presence pres pres- ence of a pea placed under 20 mattresses In Mr Adix's version the princesses include one who is addicted to food another who is scrawny a karate expert and the daughter of the Kings King's own private cook 1 MR ADIX has placed the acI action action ac ac- ac- ac tion in the imaginary kingdom I of where King George holds reign The King is played by Doug Dutton with Julie Ann Russell portraying the Queen Others in the cast include Tom Chapman as Prince Albert Earl Nelson as the Royal Wizard Wizard Wizard Wiz Wiz- ard Jim Lundstrom as the Royal Cook Ra-Layne Ra Norton as Ann the Queens Queen's maid Bobby Briggs as the Kings King's valet Ed Fritz as wik aide to the Prince Todd Woodward as John the Stable Boy Pat Freeman as Princess Fatima of Cherie Voss as Princess of Laurene Andrus Some of those taking part in The Princess and The Pea first firstin in the Young Peoples People's Theater for the season are Layne Norton Norton Nor Nor- ton Julie Ann Russell and Doug Dutton as Princess Karate of Musel- Musel I big I VICKI plays the maid to the Princesses and Peggy Freeman and Tracie Trade Pastore as court pages Other plays scheduled by the thc Pioneer Theatre for Young People this season will include The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe based on the currently currently currently cur cur- popular book by C. S Lewis to play Nov 29 a musical musical musical mu mu- adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island I scheduled for Feb 21 and a stage version of Oscar Wildes Wilde's The Ghost which will be seen Mar 14 ALL BUT the final play will be directed by Mr Adix with the last Jast under the direction of Ralph E.
