Show Director of Historical Society Hopes for Convention Site Here Will Park City be the site of the fifteenth Chapter of the Utah State Historical Society? That is the hope of Dr. Melvin T. Smith, Director of the Society who addressed the Park City Kiwanis Club Wednesday Wed-nesday night, April 18 at Treasure Trea-sure Mountain Inn. It was Ladies Night and Dr. Smith spoke of the aims of the Society in collecting, preserving and publishing Utah history. "Park City" he said, 'has a physical quality that is unique even without the people, Park City is history. It is interesting to note, he told the group, that most of mankind's history has happened since 1850. This is based on numbers of people in the known world. History is of no value to anyone unless it is published, history enriches and broadens life, particularly if it is YOUR history. Park City is rich in backgroundboth back-groundboth buildings and people. It was suggested that qualified writers attempt a series of interviews with people who have been here a long time introduced the speaker. Easter was recognized by cupcake Easter baskets made by Mrs. Simmons at eachplace. and record them for posterity. Dr. Smith, father of nine children, is a direct descendant descend-ant of Joseph Smith through his great-grandfather, Sam H. Smith, who was a younger brother broth-er of the first Mormon. He has degrees from Brigham Young University and the University Un-iversity of Wyoming and before coming to the State Historical Society in 1969. he was an Associate As-sociate Professor of History at Dixie College. Dr. Smith showed slides of historical sites around Utah many in Park City. He showed a picture of the Coalville Tab-, ernacle recently torn down. Dr. Smith termed such demolition "a sacrilege against heritage." He stressed the fact that we all are basically historians; spoke of the value of cataloging catalog-ing historical facts and urged consideration of formation of a chapter of the Historical Society here in Park City. After dinner Dr. Mark Simmons, Sim-mons, president of the local Kiwanis welcomed members and guests and turned the meeting meet-ing over to John Elwell who |
