Show Rugby Players in First Meet May 22, Provo-Today the Park City Rugby Club took the field against one of the better rugby teams in the Intermoun-tain Intermoun-tain area, the Brigham Young University "Old Men". Sixty minutes later Park City had pulled off an upset, defeating BYU 5-3. It was Park City's first win of the year and BYU's first loss. The finely skilled and experienced exper-ienced team from Provo drove hard in the first haJLf. ta'kinRad- vantage of Park City's first- sounded and Park City came home with a win in their first game of the season. The Park City Rugby Club will play a game every weekend week-end all the way through the summer. Look for around-town posters announcing the home games to be played on .the Park City High Field. The Rugby Club practices Monday, Wednesday Wed-nesday and Friday at 6:00 p.m. at the HighSchool. Anyone wishing wish-ing to play is welcome to come out. The team played at Provo with only fourteen men, one short of a full squad. The Rugby Club would like to thank Park City Resort for its generous contribution of uniforms uni-forms and balls to the team. Everyone will enjoy gettingout to watch the Park City ruggers flash their new red-gold -black uniforms while playing with rugged style and winning spirit. Almost half of the players on Park City's team were playing their first rugby game. BYU scored first but missed the kick for the conversion and led at half-time, 3-0. Park City came out roaring and riled and ready in the second period, dominating play with crushing tackles and timely, well-placed kicks. The ball was suddenly forced into the BYU end of the field where one of the Home Team committed a penalty and Park City was awarded a free kick. The ball was close to the goal line but was marked at a bad angle to the goal posts near the right sideline. Ron Cotler, the Park City kicker and Fullback, faked trying a field goal and lofted the ball across the field where Lock Gary Knudson gathered it in on the dead run and muscled into the end zone with BYU tacklers hanging all over him. Cotler converted the extra points and Park City was ahead, 5-3. The final minutes of the game were played in desperation by the BYU team. The "Old Men" tried a whole passel of tactics in an effort topierce ParkCity's stubborn defense. The clock ticked off and the final whistle |
