The game was marked by hard hitting hit-ting and numerous penalties as Park City apparently jarred the referee as well as the Salt Lake players. Park City started slowly, having trouble bailing out of its Meehan, still in action after being knocked unconcious earlier in the game, heeled the ball into Park City's Backfield. It was too late for Salt Lake. As Scrum Half Hart drilled a kick safely out of bounds the whistle sounded to end the game. Park City was a 5-3 winner. And what a crowd! The support sup-port was great. The ruggers own end of the field. The back-, field, led by Scrum Half John Hart, finally mounted to the attack, at-tack, firing crisp passes out to Wing Tom Scott. Scott ran the ball well, almost breaking for scores, but was always stopped by one of the last Salt Lake defenders. Towards the end of the first half Right Second Row John Jenkins Jen-kins scooped up an errant Salt Lake pass and headed for the goal. Jenkins wasn't to be denied as he broke two tackles and bulled twenty yards into the end zone for Park City's first three points. Kicker Ron Cotler booted boot-ed the conversion for two more points and Park City enjoyed a 5-0 halftime lead. The second half saw Park City quickly advance the ball deep into Salt Lake territory. Three times Park City closed in on pay dirt but the eager home team ruggers were thwarted by costly penalties. At this point Jeff Wallace, the Park City Left Second Row, quite certain that he had scored, questioned the "ref" and was given the old "heave-ho." Park City was faced with having to play the balance of the game short-handed. short-handed. Park City continually slammed slam-med down the opposition ballcarriers ball-carriers and forced Salt Lake to turn to a kicking game. The visitors got the break they needed late in the contest as they punted from mid-field and caught the Park City defense off-balance. The ball bounced into the end zone; there was a scramble and Salt Lake was awarded a try to make the score 5-3. But the Salt Lake Kicker folded under the pressure, pres-sure, missing the kick for the conversion from right in front of the goal posts. Salt Lake dominated the final minutes of play. Park City gave ground but held. Then a scrum was called on the Park City one-inch line. The Park Forwards, For-wards, visibly shaken, called on all they had and came down hard on the scrum, pushing out Salt Lake. Hooker Dick |
