Show Boy Scouts Will Participate in Annual Camp at Lagoon More than 6,000 Boy Scouts from Salt Lake, Summit Sum-mit and Tooele Counties and the south half of Davis County Coun-ty are expected to take part in Expo '74 the annual two-day two-day encampment at Lagoon May 3 and 4. Sponsored by the Great Salt Lake Council of the Boy Scouts, the t wo - day camp-. camp-. oree will feature demonstrations demonstra-tions of camping and outdoor skills, woodcraft, survival skills, handicraft and sports. "This is by far the biggest big-gest annual jamboree the Great Salt Lake Council has ever planned," said Dell E. Beckstead, of Kennecott Copper Corp., chairman of Expo '74. "We stress citizenship and try to get boys to understand under-stand this space age they are living in. But we still teach them old-fashioned skills their dads probably learned in Scouting," said Mr. Beck-stead. Beck-stead. "Many of these skills will be displayed at Lagoon May 3 and 4. Scouts will build bridges, make a variety of campl'ires, pit c h different kinds of tents and make furniture furn-iture and survival gear out of natural material like tree limbs and rope. "Scouts will demonstrate sanitation, cooking, knot-tyingt knot-tyingt pioneer skills and a variety of other camp and woods crafts. "No matter howScouting's changed, we still want to build men good men," said Mr. Beckstead. He added that a special feature of the two-day encampment en-campment would beanoc-tathlon beanoc-tathlon sporting event Saturday, Sat-urday, May 4, in which all the Scouts could compete in eight different contests. "Every Scout who attends Expo '74 will win a special patch to wear on his uniform and can win other awards for the octathlon competition said Mr. Beckstead. "We hope to see parents and the general public come out to Lagoon Saturday and spend the day visiting the Scouts' displays, tenting areas and the hundreds of demonstrations," he added. |
