Show The Better Park City Movement Ji B Dear Editor The Tho meeting recently held February at th the Memorial building for tor the purpose of ot formulating a policy for tor the tho Improvement of the city I attended this meetings meeting as an observer rather than Ithan thana n a participant listening attentively to the various various' committee reports which might give some light on what effort has been made In this direction It is rather unfortunate th that t such each a alack lack Jack of ot Interest in this movement was wasso was wasso so eo apparent Of ot course there may be a good deal of underlying reasons for tor such sucha a n weak response Some Bome remarks remark however were ere reflected on ou this unhappy situa situa- tion Mr Frank Payne the Incoming chairman chairman chair chaIr- man dwelt briefly on this lack of ot In Interest in in- terest Ills his remarks were timely Inasmuch Inasmuch inasmuch Inas inas- much as this condition applies to any j jeffort the citizens of ot Park I effort made by Cly whether In a socIal nodal or religious effort I Outside of ot the show business there Is 18 but a small degree of ot social effort In any j direction I The medical situation Is not as serious as It la is purported to be We still have a I hospital in this town and it id l rendering good service I However the medical situation can be remedied effectively with cooperation Al Although Although Although Al- Al though there was very little sign of ot co cooperation cooperation cooperation co- co operation at this meeting As far tar as I understand the hospital docs does retain all obligations to Its Us support from the I I I workers in iq this district Probably In Inthe Inthe Inthe I the neighborhood of per month or roughly a year Considering the cost of at maintaining this institution this is not a very large sum when you have havo to maintain continually in service a hospital staff start Granted that we are all familiar with the general conditions pertaining to the town structure itself There are num num- r erous factors that add to its detriment Mr Mr John Green pointed out some of ot otI I these these phases in one of his pet peeves peeve In Ina Ina Int t a a 1 recent report to the convention which were timely and to tp the point If It we were I to enumerate all aU our peeves there would be bo sufficient reason to do something I about them However there is plenty of evidence th that t these are truthful state state- ments We all know the conditions of ot b buildings on the main thoroughfare which Is la the tho main entrance Into the town true there are distinct Improvements but their beauty and significance are marred with these ugly scars scare of a decayed city We have that disagreeable situation to contend with Outside of a normal compensation there there is little to attract any profession not excluding the medical The problem of ot j I improvements resolves itself In Into Ino o a social and economic problem The medical profession has no time t to ponder over these difficulties Still they can be e valuable factors of ot suggestions Inthe in inthe inthe the matter of Improvements Dr Bardsley Bardsley Bards Bards- I ley I must admit spends a considerable time studying the common interest of the constituents We must appreciate that fact tact My intention has been in the course I of ot these theM remarks remark not to be too critical After all Ml its constructive criticism that really counts Geographically speaking the town site of ot Park City is awkwardly awkward y situated The I 4 majority of at homes are built on hill sites very inconvenient to tra transportation dlf dlf- I steep grades particularly particularly parti- parti i in winter weather The maintain maintain- ence once of ot these abodes are ex expensive and problematical The sanitary arrangements are MO cumbersome the distribution Jot of water the sewer system sidewalks sIdewalk I lighting managements arc are extravagant features of ot town engineering The city efty administration will agree to that I These features referred to are what we I I have to contend with when we wo contemplate contemplate plate any wholesome Improvement I I have no time to dwell on the moral side of ot this issue at present Environment hasa has a lot to do with these latest qualities I ILet Let ua us not question tho the integrity of ot those who made this townsIte possible We know very little of at their trials and tribulations The mining industry was pioneered in this region it 11 involved patience and sacrifice The Industry showed signs of an awakening Industrial Indus 1 trial workers were attracted to th the Indus Indus-I potential po- po possibilities of ot a prosperous mining mInIng mining min mIn- ing town They built according to their means with one essential thing in mind easy accession to their place of ot em em- Every family became a poten poten- factor in maintaining a town The I mountain trails became their arterial j highways Walking to and from the thee mines were their principal recreation I Horses and tramways were the real real modern form torm of transportation These Instances are the monumenta f the past making possible the opportunities ties of a livelihood to those who followed followed fol- fol I lowed in their path We are now dwellers in a new era of Improvement The old way of ot life lite Is disappearing rapidly Transportation has I evolved Into something radically differ- differ I ent It has taken the out into the great open spaces The automobile automobile automo automo- bile bus and train have shortened the distance between the home borne And the mInes and and factories Improving our analyzed analyzed analyzed anal anal- must be status as asa as-a a constituency from this angle Millions of dollars have been expended In maintaining and ana improvements through the medium of successive city administrations The wealth expended would build several towns more modern convenient better situated cheaper in administrative more sunlight the absence of ot steep grades more accessible to railroad and bus terminals terminals ter ter- had the town been more logically situated All these possibilities are available In Inthe Inthe inthe I the lower areas roads and sidewalks could be bo maintained more efficiently fire tire hazards reduced easier car access I Ito I i to a home district and a thousand other advantages I My solution to the puzzle Is to encourage encourage encourage en en- courage a movement for tor the nucleus of ofa ofa a new town area properly arranged as asI asto asto to give birth to new home ideas This I could be done without impairing the significance of ot the present structures Make the old town into a school area area- substituting a park for tor the present I townsite and you will avoid a lot of of I Ia painful sleepless nights pondering over overa a logical solution Is it any wonder that few tew people paint their homes It isn't worth it The majority of homes are withering with rot and age are age are mostly relics of ot the ancient struggle for tor existence They are not something we can hand down to posterity and be proud of ot It lt The sooner we realize this the better The Tho townsite can be improved Unproved but Its a costly operation The arterial avenues would have to be changed Sanitation would have to be dug up and re ed A good building program depends on ona ona ona a good many factors and these are part of them Compare our heritage with our other thriving communities and you will readily agree there is something rotten in Denmark I Dont Don't blame the town If you dont don't like it Its It's up to the people who are really Interested In to wholesome constructive improvement to do something about it Sweeping up the dirt and placing it under the rug is not considered good hoUsecleaning A coat of ot paint is not the tho real answer to the problem The I Improvement of ot Park City is a real hUman human hu hue hueman man problem and it takes more than ordinary comment to get going Best Dest wishes Yours BILL DILL Park City Utah February 24 1942 1042 |
