Show Vets Administration lI i Information Service I Editors Editor's Note This Is the third In Ina a series of articles on Education and I Training for veter veterans ns under the I Korean GI Bill I A veteran may change his program I but no more than once under any circumstances cir cir- I If progress in his present I I program has not been satisfactory ry he may if he shows VA that the lack o of progress was not due to his own misconduct misconduct misconduct miscon miscon- duct neglect or lack or application change his program if he has not had a change prior to that time i A change In program usually means a change in the veterans veteran's goal or obJective objective objective tive VA said For example If a veterans veteran's educational goal was obtaining an AB I college degree and he decided he wanted to go go on and get either I I a masters master's de- de deI i I I I I gre gree or switch to a professional goal i such as law thIs law this would be considered J a change of program VA said I Changes in his course without changIng changing chang chang- ing his goal would not be considered a I J change of program VA said Id as long as the changes did not Involve 1 material loss of credit or 2 an extension of the l time originally planned for completing the the course VA approval and a supplemental certificate must be obtained before the I veteran may change his program This I will be granted provided the veteran I makes his change before his deadline for starting training and if lf hIs hla conduct I and progress have been satisfactory Application for change in I II program should be s sent ent t to the VA regional office I that has the veterans veteran's records together with a report of I progress and conduct the veterans veteran's I present school or orI I training establishment DEADLINES DE I A S'S SS veteran dIscharged before August 20 1952 must start his training befOre S I I August 20 20 1954 A veteran discharged on or after August 20 1952 has two tyro I years from his date dare of discharge or separation separation sep sep- In which to begin A veteran In training after after 1 is starting starting start start- ing deadline must generally pUrsue his course continuously until it Its is com com- But he has the right to suspend training for tor periods of at not more than 12 consecutive months months and and may susI suspend Suspend sus sus- I pend even longer If I. he can prove to VA that the suspension over 12 months was wasI I due to reasons beyond his control I PAYMENTS TO VETERANS NS A veteran in training receives an as asI anI I education and training allowance each I month from the Government This Ibis Is the only payment made VA will not pay pap for tuition and fees separately to the school With the help of the allowance the veteran must meet all of his own trainIng trainIng train train- ling Ing expenses The veteran will get his monthly al allowance allowance allowance al- al lowance some time after the end of each month of training completed But be be- tore foreN toreVA VA can pay him It must get a certification signed by the veteran and his his school or establishment that he was actually taking his course during that period Normally a a. veterans veteran's check should go out within 20 days after the time VA gets the certification I I The veteran will not be paid for any arty 1 period when he is not pursuing his course in accordance with his schools schOol's I regular policies and in accordance with the law In addition If he Is in a nonI nonaccredited non non- i or the on I accredited course or in I training he will not be paid for tor any absences in excess of the rate of 30 days i for a month 12 period Week ends and ana legal holidays do not count as absences I Payments and Next week More on Time Full and Time Part-Time Courses |
