immediate duty in the stricken zone whenever necessary NO GIVE UP IN SOUTHERN california under the caption of taking one on the chin the los angeles times of saturday march bilth says I 1 southern california took one on the chin yesterday and came up with courage I 1 undaunted earthquakes are natural phenomena caused by subsurface readjustments the they may and do occur anywhere at any time the actual damage or loss 1053 of life due to these quivers in southern california in all its history has been less than that resulting from one good midwest tornado tropical hurricane or mississippi flood serious as the cembler was it hardly ranks as a major disaster though tor for the time being it has taxed the relief agencies of the section long beach compton watts huntington park south gate and other communities muni ties in that general area a suffered uffe redI most but no community was wiped out and I 1 in n none was the list of dead and seriously hurt large compared with the population it must be reme remembered in bared that the area affected has upward of residents we have been jolted but are by no means prostrated there Is no occasion for hysteria or tear fear modern a structures t ruc tures suffered only slightly a tribute to our architects a and n d building regulations sympathy goes out to the communities most seriously stricken none are defeated or dis heartened southern california will mop up repair the damage and go on its motto Is still straight Stra lEht ahead the following are excerpts from a letter received by john rugar from sherman pargo fargo los angeles yesterday yes we had our share of the earthquake but no serious damage was done to us we were just sitting down to aln dinner when the first shock occurred and believe me it was plenty hard hard enough e u gh to tip most of the water out of the nio glasses and coffee out of the cups cupa 0 onto the table cloth to shake pictures I 1 from the piano and walls tip over piano I 1 lamps etc but so far as we can see the home or garage was not damaged at all however I 1 have had all the earthquakes I 1 need I 1 confess I 1 was a little scared but not at any tune time panicky as was a number of people 6 los angeles was not hurt so BO badly A good part of the glass down town was shattered thirty five of 0 the big may store windows collapsed a good many cornices cornicks cor nices fell into the streets and a few walls of the older buildings collapsed the loss of life in the city was only eight and of course that Is plenty I 1 have seen very little of the results of the quakes as the devastey dev asted area Is practically under martial control and no one are allowed inside of that area alrea I 1 without a police order which I 1 am informed Is hard bard to get the school I 1 bulldogs bull buildings digs in los angeles seem to be worse hit than any other class of buildings and had the quake occurred when schools were in session there would have been a heavy loss of 0 life all the schools are closed this week until a thorough inspection spec tion is made maae QUAKE experience AT HIS LOS ANGELES HOME A letter received this morning from W A gives the following interesting account of experiences at his los angeles home at the time of the recent terrible earthquake what a wonderful thing the radio I 1 guess you really had word of the extent and seriousness of the earthquake as soon as I 1 did while I 1 realized that it was by tar far the worst I 1 had ever experienced perien perlen ced it was not until I 1 heard the news broadcast irom from the times over that I 1 learned the seriousness of the disaster I 1 was outside of the house nt at the time in a stooping position filing a screwdriver to get a better edge on it w when hen all of a sudden there was a violent jigging motion and I 1 wondered what was t the he matter with me not realizing at once that it was an earthquake hurrying in the house the dishes were rattling some of them being broken pans falling failing from the shelves and glasses of jelly chloes first thought was of chloe mary and she ehe was wheeling heeling her out of the house by the time I 1 got there it was of short duration but it seemed a long time and we were thoroughly scared there was no damage to buildings in our neighborhood and it was some time later that we learned how bad it was in other sections ever since then there have been lighter shocks from time to time keeping one in dread of another big one several former Par kites are scattered through the area most afflicted but their names have not appeared in the lists published one of the salesmen in the office where rhoda lou works was out with his bis wife and 16 year old daughter doing a little shopping in the compton district where he lives liven when a brick wall collapsed killing and burying the wife and daughter he said he ha saw the wall was falling but almost immediately after the quake they were blinded by the dust and debris and hi b could not get them to safety this Is just one of many sad cases there was not much damage in the downtown area of los angeles but ever so many of the large plate glass show windows broken the times building Is specially well constructed and it would take a very severe shaking to damage it from what the men on the composing room floor say they got a severe sh shaking 0 king up though and were pretty scared T there hera are some who passed through the borrowing experience of the dynamiting in 1910 2910 one operator who was in it and had a brother operator killed t turned u arned so sick from the quake that he ha had d to give up and go home mrs C J haueter now ahing au ing at riverside california in renewing her subscription said the quake last friday was the worst ever experienced in that section the lady says she was badly frightened but the rest of the family seeni seed it mind it a bit when the chimney on hen home crashed she thought the end of i the world had come and 0 J told berhe he thought she was going to expire with heart failure the shocks since th thi bl bue have been so numerous every body ia getting accustomed to them mrs haueter slays says notwithstanding earthquakes they tare are all in love with california calir for rila r 4 t |
