Show W laigh school notesia val H HW SCIENCE STROLLER NOTICE that the physics class Is taking up the study of electric motors and electrical units Is quite evident from the appearance of the laboratory and science room that mr bingham discovered the boys in the physics class chewing what he thought to be tobacco but it pruned out to be dried up fruit cake that when mr dykeman was a few years younger than he Is now he made frequent raiding excursions to his neighbors nectarine orchards that mr smith has been very careful lately about playing with his watch chain but mr dykeman seems not to be able to leave the cuff of his bis coat alone while giving the class a lecture that the smallest girl in the biology class makes the most noise that mr air bingham certainly spoke the truth when he said the only time he give a little test was when he gave a big one that the biology classes are studying flowers and fruits they find the study interesting though difficult that his class had thirteen tests testa during the last six weeks that bill porter was properly squelch c cd d last week that it if ellen mawhinney leava a certain sophomore boy alone zula clegg Is going to cause a litt little ae excitement that she better leave the freshmen tresh men alone or the chlor phylls are going to gang up on her that one must constantly be on the lump jump in chemistry to avoid inh inhaling poison or getting into an explosion that francis harrington has the ha habit bit ot of sitting still when the rest of the class jumps this results in frequent disasters that this same senior never gets a report in on time that this report better stop before I 1 get into trouble HARAN 32 0 SOCIAL STUDIES the students of world history have been studying the stuart and tudor lines of kings in england they have been promised a stiff examination so they have spent much time in reviewing the civil war and its results have been studied by the american history students I 1 mary many interesting points were brought out during the class discussions such as the discovery of ether the beginning of the american red cross cros s and the assassination of lincoln the tha sociology students have been studying social defense against crime they found that there are many methods i of lessening crime and ot of criminals 35 0 0 0 TO TAKE TV TYPING TESTS report cards seem to be the cause ot of much activity in classes among the graduates ot of late that Is in all except the typewriting classes graduates in the second year typing class will take their speed tests lor for pins next week so that accounts tor for their extraordinary extra ordinary interest in ila typing two except exceptional iora I 1 W writers ol of the graduates are arc Tb theodore eodore johnson and marjorie Marj orle dark clark both of whom should make sixty words per minute in the tests in first year stenography the graduate students are interested in the prospect of taking up a new text and practical dictation of course they are especially interested in the examination that will cover the whole book francis trythall Is I 1 leading coding the first year class in bookkeeping having handed in his i books tor for following speech was given ertem in the speech class last week by mona snyder little incidents in the history of tills this valley parley P pratt discovered the valley of snyderville derville which he named parleys park my great grandfather bought the valley from him lor for a yoke of oxen this business deal may seem rather insignificant to us today because the valley Is now worth the valley was soon positioned au out t I 1 into n to homesteads and my greater great gr grandfather adf at he built and operated a saw mill and a grist I 1 mill this saw mill was the first in the state of utah the me saw used in it was vastly different from those used today being a straight saw or what Is called a whip saw and Is now in a museum in salt lake the saws we use now are I 1 round the flour ground in the grist mill my great grandfather hauled into salt lake and sold tor for 2000 20 00 per hundred pounds it took tour four days to make a round trip to salt lake and while hile he was gone he hc would leave a guard at the mills it if the guard saw the indians s coming he would first scatter the lumber and then run tor for the foit ho he did this because it if the lumber was piled up the indians indiana would set fire to it but it if it was scattered they were too lazy to pile it so they burn it my great grandfather owned the first mowing machine in the state ot m utah and my grandfather and a partner baul hauled the first boiler to the first mine in park city which was the ontario mine it may be interesting to us today to note what they ats ate and wore in those loy days they ate plain foods such as potatoes toes meat and bread and they ground I 1 their own sausage they ate the wild berries herr lea but had little or no sugar molasses was used tor for sweetening and also to make all the candy which was called horehound they had few of our fancy foods one night a dance was held at what iwas was called the rock all the people in snyderville derville and park city were invited there was a german cook in the camp who was authorized to serve t the h refreshments among these he in made d s several e wash tubs of potato salad salad th the p people eod not knowing what it wi was it like it and eat it the women of this ti time dressed in i hoop aud and the men wore blue cheviot shirts vests home homemade made overalls and tall alk hats 1 the boys were lust just as ous as the boys are reputed to be today they made what they called tle tick k t tacks alck or whiz litz bangs by taking e empty mp t 5 t tin cans making a hole in the bottom through which they threaded a rosined string tho the string was tacked to the window frame and when they pulled the other endi end it made noise elou enough gh to waken the dead especially on a clear frosty night ard ara ar d it carld bs ba heard for or miles around they often played pranks on their friends for instance one night while dad as s 11 n 1 the hose hoise calling on his girl his jealous boy took h his is buggy and put tho the two large wheels on one side and the two small wheels on the other poor dad and his bis sweetheart wondered why they were nearly tipping over all the anay ay to the dance and back MONA A SNYDER 41 still 11 studying Ala cbeth and they are very anxious alu ClOus to find out how bow this tragedy will end the juniors especially the girls feel quits quite aggrieved because launcelot tailed failed i to love elaine and she died ot of a broken heart the boys leel feel that elaine Is to blame she should have fallen in love with someone nearer her own age some sophomores are having a difficult time memorizing ulysses they explain the reason for this difficulty Is that the sophomores ability to to memorize Is lour four lines or less a day cheer up sophomores ulysses written in a day the freshmen typewriting type writing classes continue to writs paragraphs count each others er iorg ors and write the scores in the record kven arven though errors are made the etui etu i cents should get an inspiration from the valuable advice that they type every day of the th the author was a student creat philosophers for every line of the notice la is one that teaches a lesson tha 13 students should be 9 great at thinkers ss lf s s well as efficient typists by the time I 1 tt course Is completed the shorthand class will translate its last page in the shorthand book very roon this suggests a difficult examination with many frowns on otherwise cheerful faces the students do not deny they have enjoyed the text even it if the only pleasant moments were when humorous mistakes were made bertha con to call the u a by the name of 0 o and vice versa mistakes in translation are still being made but all ot of the students are wondering why those simple little letters frightened them so much lix in september it Is a good thing the students open their books to the last pages the first week ot of school or there would have been no first year shorthand class the new work will include reviews and dictation many students who intend to follow this line of 0 work are hoping their employer stutters 1 so they will have time to catch up with him mcknight 32 e Q 0 40 9 w SCIENCE department the study of the skin Is taking up much of the time of the physiology students they have been examining hair roots and fingernails and finding perspiration glands on the palm of the hand through the microscope alter after a tew few days in the lab the students find it difficult to settle down to regular class work which includes tests and recitations on the different chapters consequently they are hoping for more in the laboratory the chemistry class was astounded last thursday when mr smith announced that the most unusual thing had happened in his class so unusual was it that he could not remember of its ever having happened before after being persuaded to tell what it was he informed the students that everyone had passed in the six weeks examination no one can imagine what made him so charitable but perhaps it Is because he would hate to see any of them have another but who says the seniors are not brilliant the biology classes are preparing for a test on oil seeds elements compounds nutrients etc they expect it to be a difficult one the class was disturbed on monday by an unusual noise that sounded to be a patient saying ah h la tor for a doctor tut but it proved to be the boys chorus trying to train their voices HARAN 33 32 |
