Show political wheels I 1 alky br L f f I 1 i washington march 14 A break in the ranks of what might be called the democratic bartys big three balth ra kob makes make it more ce certain in than ever that the 1932 convention ot of that party will be an exceedingly gly lively affair 40 aw aw governor franklin D roosevelt has come openly to the parting of 0 the ways w with ith hla his political mentor alfred E smith and the former gove governors mors handpicked hand picked ch chairman airman ot of the party john J Ro joskoll 41 aw aw ostensibly the break came over the proposition ot of consi considering derlin g pr prohibition 0 0 at I tile the recent meeting ot of tb the D democratic in C t 1 national committee called by mr raskob to consider party policies in the time intervening before the next convention I 1 however those in the know assert thail that the storm has been brewing brewin g lor for a long ong time aw N mr roosevelt is foremost among the candidates tor for the democratic presidential nomination twice he personally led the light fight tor for the nomination ot of mr air smith once unsuccessfully in that hectic new york convention of 24 and the second time successfully in the houston houlton convention in 1928 aw ap aw presumably he counted upon the tup up port of mr smith in his own effar efforts to I 1 receive the next nomination but the 1928 standard bearer has made it fairly clear that he has the desire to make another try tor for the presidency and in that frame of mind naturally he would look after only his own interest As governor mr air roosevelt Is in fa control of the democratic party machinery in new mew york state certainly outside of new york city consequently he should be able to go to the next convention with EL a good majority of the empire state delegation how many delegates mr air smith may have would be problematical with these two native sons of the unions largest state dichting fich ting it out at the convention a deadlock will be inevitable particularly since it takes a two thirds vote tor for nomination i so it would seem that the demo democratic ocr atc abc party has on its hands a tremendous rent fight aside from the terr terrific tic struggle artig g r that Is certain to ensue as a result of the efforts of the wets led by mr raskob to obtain an lit at least moist de declaration clara in the party platform mr roosevelt Is regarded a as s the liberal c candidate tn in fact lie he Is so 1 I liberal that the insurgents of the democratic and republican par parties t lea in both the house and senate have invited him to participate ipaty in their forthcoming conference in washington to consider a legislative program for the first and long session of the new congress in which unquestionably the so called progressives Progress ives will wield the balance of power in both houses 0 O 0 O I 1 toe the invitation to th the e new york governor was extended by senator george W norris of nebraska who while posing as a republican supported governor smith in 1928 he insists he has not committed himself to the roosevelt candidacy in 1932 2932 but the invitation to the new york governor to attend the conference of progressives Progress ives here w would indicate that he regards him as the rn most liberal of the more than half dozen candidates now in the field lor for the democratic nomination 1 aw W 45 more and more senator norris is arrogating ro to himself the role of the wise man whose opinions and theories must prevail one of his latest proposals was that he resign from the senate and be permitted to operate muscle shoals under government control the cost of that scheme to the american tax payers would have been too great |
