account ot of the world war ar I 1 am reminded of 01 a writt written e n prophecy made by me when the uni united te d states entered that conflict it all came tr true uc I 1 will not ask you to print that but here her e Is m my y conal conclusion the boys who went over the top were the spearhead spear head ot of the force ot of a nation comparable to a vast reservoir the water that strikes the wheel and that is manifest in power Is in fit reality the tore fore front ot of all that body ot of water behind that gives it head and power so the battle front ot of the americans in the world war was not to be estimated in so many men alone but they that struck with that head that spiritual force of a nation behind every effort and in every arm was the pride and vigor and ex pec tency ol of all their families and friends of a great people aroused an and d united for a national purpose 0 0 0 he who dared and died had but manifested the force of an undying spirit had but consecrated that high effort to redoubled force that was followed as by the waves of the sea did a company perish all but six or two or even one that living head carried forward the spirit of all and conquered or did his duty so of those who never reached the front who never met the opportunity to flo do or make the supreme a sacrifice those who qualified and stood I 1 ready to take their places or those of ti ti gr arrn army y vho aho all in place did e their duty and contributed of the spirit they all made up the great reservoir of I 1 power that drove the spearhead spear head bead with wit Z white hot force into opposing forces at I 1 the front 0 0 so behind every loyal citizen Is the spiritual force of his conception of devotion I 1 to the principles of his country I 1 of his family of his ancestors consciously or unconsciously he reacts re acts to those standards he does not stand alone in a crisis but is imbued by all he be holds dear by the reverence of father mother brother sister and his bis friends that is a the spirit that shall be at last the sole american inheritance of the world war of every war and struggle for right find and of ot of country honke home end ancestors that coupled with I 1 justice is 0 o the spiritual force of the higher very civilization sincerely CHAS E STREET I 1 the p pat st week a latter letter was received from our former well known townsman miner and mill man joe T cescel which will net only prove of interest to his many utah friends but to the many I 1 I 1 readers leaders of this column in general I 1 it wll will be renie remembered ber ad mr cescel left park city several years ago to assume charge of a big mining and milling plant i in old mexico it was while holding this I 1 important position that he was shot by a discharged and treacherous mexican employed emp loye the result of which mr cescel I 1 was completely blinded for life I 1 0 0 I 1 after recovering frog from the wound and realizing the awful fact that his sight 1 would never again toe be restored he did not despair like many would have done taut but bravely put his latent talents talent t to work to master the art of story writing at which he succeeded admirably and scores of his short stories of fiction have appeared in many of the magazines of the country 0 0 0 later mr cescel married an estimable new york young lady at the time engaged in newspaper work fo for r years the 1 happy couple le made their home in new york city mrs cescel greatly aiding her i husband in his chosen profession 0 0 I 1 three or tour four years ago mr and mrs I will be enjoyed and appreciated 0 dear dad at the moment we are having our worst storm of the season with the wind whooping it up around I 1 miles an hour snow and rain don in chunks and the house 1 from cellar to radio pole atop the root roof in tact fact this Is the worst storm 1 we came up here and I 1 see some shoveling ahead of me you know I 1 still sling a wicked shovel holdover irom from my park city days what Is more I 1 take any time tor for it though I 1 have a preference for or after dark as this does not interfere with roy my a work day there la is a sort of a loke joke about N my snow heaving because a man t passing by on tho the road one very dark p evening remarked that the guy who lives 11 there must sure have great sight to see where hes going on a black night like I 1 this 0 0 I 1 one 0 of our neighbors ran to in with the I 1 paper just before noon and mrs K read 11 me the headings from which I 1 gathered that tammany and the boys are pretty much on the run district attorney crane a good tammany man seems to be very much hurt that he 1 should be suspected ol of being lazy and I 1 iz flopping on the job and jimmy walker has already started lor for california tor for a much needed rest now rumor has it 1 I that perhaps jimmy will need so bo much J I 1 rest that hell resign A wise decision like this ought to greatly help new york e 4 I 1 apparently governor roosevelt noo sevelt Is breaking with al smith and tammany which will most likely help him hirn with upstate 1 folks and the country in gener general at present our al seem to be hot I 1 every time I 1 think ot of the price me metals a I 1 get a pain in the neck 7 where oh where Is the bottom something must bust pretty soon 0 it looks as it if business is somewhat better in the east though our immediate neighborhood Is still fairly quiet prices in the stores however have not gone down the same as they have in new york city and other nearby places in consequence the people are not doing much home shopping and peddlers with truck loads of fruit and vegetables are cutting in on the village trade last evening we hooted hoofed it down to the talkies tallies tal kies seeing charleys aunt a doggone good picture I 1 find that I 1 can get a lot out ot of the talkies tallies tal kies and it certainly gives me added pleasure to know that I 1 can go along and see mrs K raised such a row about his having a sweetheart they ann and john have a very nice apartment in uptown new york and john was the only member ot of his firm not to have his salary cut on the first ot of the year we are very proud ot of him and very very fond at f his wife dan shields and paul hunt seem to be doing their dang dest tor for utah and I 1 silver good for or them they certainly ought to have the support of 0 more peo pie than what they have you may probably recall that paul hunt used to be on the job with me w when I 1 was in charge ot a mill in old mexico in fact he was very much with me tor for he be was the only man to stick to his job on the cyanide plant when I 1 was sent there as bobs twelve out of the fifteen foreigners out of the fifteen there quit when the old boss was let out also lots lota of mexicans but these latter soon got hungry and came back to their jobs I 1 was mighty glad to see a young man about hunts size around you bet mexico Is dead especially mining I 1 dont see how the people get along and very likely lots of them find the big innards na ads eating the little innards most of the time last month we had our fruit pruned and dressed up tor for
