Show chas moore writes on the silver quest OL 01 in a letter to george A fisher of keetley utah mr charles moore deals at some length on the silver question endorsing the proposed measure ot of senator reed smoot and urging the west to unite in this particular measure mr moore says in part I 1 have been thinking a great deal about this silver euver question and while there ther e may be something wrong with smoots acts plan yet I 1 cant see just what Is wrong with it and it looks all right to me his plan is to let these european nations pay their obligations to the united states in silver at an ounce of 01 course it if they should start to buy a little sliver silver and buy a few hundred million ounces at 30 cents and 40 cents and 60 50 cents an ounce a silver would soon to 60 cents an ounce and by and by it would A be bound to go to an ounce these european nations owe the united states about million dollars a year for nearly sixty years this would just about take all the production of the world and in most years it would be more than the total production of the world it would only take three or tour four years to put silver up to an ounce ounces I 1 and it if such a plan could be put through congress it would put silver up to 40 cents or 45 cents an ounce immediately the european nations want the united I 1 states to forget all about this indebtedness and they say they cant pay all the big bankers want the united S states i ates to doaget this indebtedness and not ask B europe to pay any more I 1 say that some plan could be worked out like smoot has suggested to let the european nations make their payments in silver at an on ounce nee this would be civi giving ng them the biggest part ot of the indebtedness tor for the next few years it could be arranged to let them pay in silver at 1100 an ounce lor for the next five years this ought to be enough to satisfy europe she could pay her debts to this country in silver that would cost 40 cents or 60 50 cents an ounce or not more than 60 cents an ounce and this would be forgiving them most of the indebtedness or at least halt half of it every big eastern banker will just tear his hair out because the east Is opposed to sliver silver and they are re just like a dog with hydrophobia when he sees water they have a nt fit when anybody mentions silver I 1 think senator smoots idea is good and the only practical idea that I 1 have heard of yet to do anything of any consequence for or silver silver Is like everything else now there Is no demand for it and asiatic countries and mexico and other countries countr las are hard bard up and they have to sell some of their silver reserves in order to get a little gold to buy stuff from countries that are in on a gold basis it Is not overproduction over production of sliver silver that Is doing the harm because production of silver has remained about the same for over forty years it Is not over production but it Is like a great many other things there Is a surplus but the surplus Is not very great the surplus Is caused by the fact that people in india and china and all over the world are compelled to sell a little silver in order to raise a little money to buy irom froin countries that are on a gold standard if the wall street bankers want to get their abc lr five billion dollars back that they loaned to south america and to european nations they can take silver at F art ar ounce i f they want to do so they want uncle sarn sam to forgive the european nations their debts so the big eastek easle n bankens tan cart collect their debts from europe tills is great stuff and the poor bowlegged taxpayer that Is halt hall starved and busted and selling ills his cifes diamond lings and his car and his furniture kiture out ot of the house to try to keep from res starving to death has to pay the taxes to help out the big eastern bankers men lien like yourself and myself and millions of others have to walk up and to toe the mark and pay these debts that are owed to the eastern bankers I 1 think you ought to busy yourself and get at as many prominent people as possible to write to senator smoot I 1 think the th people of utah ought to give him plenty of backing the devil of it is ie that nobody here in the west has any plan to help silver or I 1 abowd say that everybody has some come plan of his jovn and most ot of them are perfectly ct y ridiculous you cant blame the ca cartel tein r people and the eastern bankers toi for lau laughing blag fit at the people peaple in the west 1 I lave heard head about 25 or 30 different clars proposed to help tolver but I 1 heard of a tingle tingie plan that has any hope ot of success and any hope ol of i beof doing ag any good except senator smoots iliin gaii there pre are other plans that are perfectly all right but there Js Is no hope kofl ot getting them through congress and thie Is no hope ot of getting any action oni on them I 1 1 I am going into this matter mr fisher tit at considerable length because I 1 know that you have considerable influence and you know a lot of people and vou pre are well acquainted with senator smoot and I 1 think he be ought to nave have a little encouragement from utah and from the western states it if the western senators the western states dont agree on something we will get absolutely nothing out ot of congress to help silver we can get most anything we want in reason if all the western congressmen and western senators and the western a tates states will agree on bom something ething that Is practical and something worth while CHAS MOORE |
