to those ot of the party w who he tor for the first time commenced to get a glimpse of the many I 1 scenic marve marvels is of 0 the southern part of i our state I 1 all the highways down this way are cemented or oiled and in consequence the driving Is a continual delight the only fault it if any being the good roads making travel so easy and rapid that much of the many scenic gra grandeury grandeurs gran d deurs nUrs a are re missed or at least not tully fully comprehended I 1 0 0 I 1 after passing through the pretty little I 1 town of 0 moroni the beautiful iid S temple ol of mantl marvels ot of the great engineering teats in this famous road construction 1 ayou YOU have to register with government ot of 4 I 1 1 I 1 and who are always courteous in giving any information desired I 1 j we read that the zion mount carmel highway has been called the most spectacular feat ol of highway construction ever undertaken due to the stupendous construction difficulties encountered in building it the first ol of these was how to get the road up over the great cliffs forming the walls ot of the canyon from its start on the floor of the valley the road zigzags up over the talus slope in fine creek canyon in a series ot of six switch backs in an area little more than a mile long and halt half a mile wide there have been located 3 miles ot of roadway at the end ol of this section the road enters a tunnel feet long where it continues to ascend on a 5 per cent grade this tunnel follows quite closely the face of the cliff and at six selected points galleries overlooking the canyon below have been broken out some of the most remarkable views of southern utah are to be found along this road while the tunnel Is the most spectacular portion other sections are of even greater scenic interest work on this project was started la in october 1927 and it was completed early in the summer of 1930 the total cost of the highway was close to of which a million and a halt half was spent on the park section that portion outside the park was built under federal aid in I 1 operation cooperation co with t the 1 e state after making the complete circle of the carmel highway a ride was taken andl and nearly two hours were spent in zions canyon visiting thc jhc beautiful zion can 1 yon lodge gazing with rapture at the marvelous marve loua works ot of nature spending some time in the museum established in fil the P part ark in which there are scores interesting relics and regular lectures I 1 regarding the history and wonders 0 this wonderful government possession you ore are told that tor for gorgeous coloring and unusual I 1 eros lonal formations the canyon country i of 0 southwestern utah and northern arizone arizona has no equal the canyons themselves are stupendous in size and forma 1 I atlon and of hues brilliant glowing almost unbelievable we lott left the park about 4 p m and over a splendid road drove to st george arriving there at it was wag a delight tul ful ride and an interesting one yes we were tired with the busy day of continual sight seeing yet because ot of the intense heat beat at the hotel we rested but little at night however we were sufficiently to be up at tuesday morn ing air and alter after a 4 a m breakfast at the hotel we were again on the high highway hay at a in the early morning ride was cool and much enjoyed only one piece of 0 bad road wea was encountered and that aft atter er leaving the arizona line and ana getting into nevada ad territory there was only about five miles fles of it and workmen are now at dt work put putting ng this in shape and with its completion the entire highway from st george to the pacific coast will be hard finished and oiled making it a drive worth while with all former handicaps completely obliterated we vie remained an hour or so at los asand and say what a busy place that now Is and we must inform our readers that many scores ot of idle men swarm the sparks parka and all available testing loafing places bublies Bubl nes ness Is booming t there here and because lot the great boulder dam activities los I 1 i vegas Is forging ahead in leaps and I 1 bounds and business we were informed Inform cd i I 1 of all kinds Is on the upgrade up grade I 1 f I 1 we stopped at barstow for dinner and was in alhambra california at the i home ol of dr L H and family receiving a
