Show national affairs by bv FRANK P one oi of the most significant develop ments of the american trend in regard to our foreign policies becomes apparent with the adherence ot of the united states to the world court there Is no longer any considerable body ol of expressed public opinion to the effect the that we ought to assume part of the burden ot of policing europe and other parts partis of the he eastern hemisphere those who desire ire our adherence to the world cou court under the root formula as well as those who insist that the original senate reservations are as tar far as we can go toward international commitments insist that there Is no intent ot of involving us in foreign P political 0 lit eat entanglements entangle ments no statesman wi will 1 I 1 insist in the world court debate that we ought to go into partner ship with europe and each group in the senate will aver that no matter what the advantages of its particular plan may be this plan will not entangle us in the league ot of nations 9 0 0 with this in mind it is interesting to go back in memory to the original light on the membership ot of the united states in the league ot of nations in those hectic days following the world war there was a considerable group in our country which felt that it was our duty to go into political partnership with europe they declared that we owed it as a duty to humanity to join with the other nations in the league to maintain the status quo as provided by the versailles treaty and to furnish money and force wherever necessary to punish any nation which might violate the orders of the league 10 0 O 0 there was a terrific battle over the league and those who believed that we ought to remain clear of european en tangle ments following the advice of washington and ana jefferson won a complete victory this victory in the senate was followed by a campaign in which c our membership in the league was an issue and in which those opposed to foreign entanglements entangle ments won so decisive victory that there could be no question as to how the american people stood on the issue that there has been no change in n P public bublic opinion since that time la is evidenced by the fact that in 1928 both great political parties declared in their platform that the united states should pursue an independent course and shape i its foreign policies without european en tangle ments 40 0 O 0 0 this brings us down to tho the present some of the european nations rejected one or the senate reservations to our adherence to the world court and a compromise was worked out those who sponsor the so called root boot compromise declare that it in no way involves us in the league of nations or in european entanglements entangle ments the newspapers and statesmen who oppose the root formula deny this and say that it weakens the senate reservations the combat in the senate it if there Is one will be fought out on that issue there will be no 0 one n e to dec declare I 1 are as was done back in 1919 that we owe it as a duty t to 0 humanity anity to join the league and try to help settle european quarrels there ere are doubtless considerable forces in the country who would like to launch us on an international program but they are Ifor tor the time at least sprit they realize realize that the people at resent besent are Is in I 1 no mood to accept |
