Show washington letter by NATIONAL PRESS THE RETURN TO washington washington D C sept 17 the east including the tee hard boiled capital city has been stirred to emulation by reason of the character of the reception which the west gave the president during his stay in ili that region the east in the past has always been inclined to assume the attitude that a president was only a president important but not important enough to get excited over As a result the usual pose in washington has been to ignore or pay most indifferent attention to the comings find and goings of the met chief executive Washington washingtonians lans ians have always been willing to take their country cousins to the spectacle but held themselves rigidly it if not superciliously aloot aloof the west has bal taught the east a lesson the fineness sincerity decency and spontaneity of the reception which it gave to the president during his stay has punctured the self esteemed skin of the washingtonians Washington ians native and proxy and the people of the eastern territory as a whole the east has begun to solemnly weigh with itself whether tt it has not been overlooking a bet in its past indifference because it also knows the ignoring of the chief executive was not a mark of respect but because the easterners felt they were some dunkins pun kins themselves even it 11 he happened to ce be president in no other way can one explain the tact fact that indifferent washington which virtually ignored his departures and returns last summer and the year before to end and from the adirondacks and the ea eastern s tern seab seaboard 0 ard out the other night both at the station and along the right of way to the white house and almost worked itself up to the point of cheering the chief executive since his returns it has been noted that the crowds which gather around the white house have largely augmented in size and in enthusiasm once again it would seem as if the west had taught the east a lesson ol of respect yes and of patriotism 4 14 COURTESY or OF THE WEST western courtesy according to one of the intimates of the president is now ranked in his mind as being coequal co equal with western hospitality south dakota his summer habitat has as many political factional rows as the average central and western state in many cases these political feuds are even a little sharper than those east ol of the mississippi during his stay the president met leaders leader and members of all groups and what was a matter of fine satisfaction to him because he interpreted it as a tribute bute to his office was that the r rival I 1 v a I 1 leaders not only declared but maintained a political moratorium during hla his stay so at one and the same time he was able to have these various leaders break bread with him without tear fear ot of embarrassment the president was also touched by the tact fact that while access to him was extraordinarily tra easy that in no single instance was this liberty construed es as license there were lob job hunters and lavor favor seekers but they never broached their missions the open door was never abused these people of themselves had fine appreciation ot of the dignities and lived up to them magnificently aw av IS mississippi AN OMEN al smith it if nominated will carry the solid south not because the south wants smith but because as certain southern leaders have explained they have no machinery in the south lor for counting republican votes it may be news to northern citizens but in many of the counties of the southern tales states election day Is never liever held dan moody governor of texas acord angly was within the facts when he recently journeyed to new york and laid a laurel wreath words ot of unction and the electoral vote ot of the state ot of texas at the feet ot of governor smith what he tailed failed to tell the governor however was that on the day that happened texas lor for the first time could be really listed politically tl ti as a doubtful state dan talked about what texas would do for al smith let us see what the sovereign cove reign state of mississippi has already done to him in that commonwealth they have been nominating a democratic candidate tor for governor ex governor theodore G bilbo was a leading candidate tor for this position his nomination seemed a foregone and in the first primary he be beat governor murphree Murph rec almost almos t two to one because of the fact that the there re were ere tour four candidates and the lead leading ing me man n did not obtain a majority a se second cond p primary rima ry was necessary bilbo was picked t to 0 clear the field and then his opponent issued ft a statement let ement that governor al smith thru his secretary had congratulated bilbo on oil ills his primary fight and that in return bilbo had promised the mississippi pre convention delegates to al smith within one week bos lead dropped from rom to less than and when the second primary was held murphree who had been originally detested defeated two to one was only behind bilbo it Is frankly admitted that Bil laos vote would not hays have been sufficient to attract the attention ot of a 26 vacuum cleaner it his opponents had been able to get the at al smith story into the rural districts under the circumstances it would seem that what mississippi did to al smith Is a little more important as a poll political omen than what dan moody promises TAX TANG RELIEF BELIEF with all due respect to the he gentlemen in high official position in both the republican and democratic parties who with carom shots are trying to spread the belief that the little fellow has had enough tax relief and that the corporations po rations and the big surtax payers need additional reductions it would be just as well it they soft pedaled that line of argument A reduction in corporation taxes can be probably explained and defended because the money thus saved will go either into the pockets of the workmen and stockholders in reasonably fair proportion but the little fellow CRU can yet be relieved and he should be relieved of another part of his load before we begin to weep over the woes boes of the taxpayers in the higher brackets taxation relief should now be based in part on a lull full understanding of the habit which the ordinary cost of living does to even a substantial weekly pay envelope and nobody has a right to say that the little tellow fellow should not have more relief until it has been proved that all these other factors of living have been given full consideration 41
