| Show DENIES CHARGES OF BARD says catholics care for indians with own money leaving no motive fop charge los angeles cal feb 1 right rev thomas W conaty bishop 0 this roman catholic entered an emphatic denial to the charges made yesterday by senator bard that the catholic church had endeavored to influence the senators action in the matter of distribution ot indian funds by the promise of political support the charges are absurd said the bishop in the first place they cannot apply to this district because we do not receive any government funds for use in the schools we take care ot our indians with our own money the catholic church does nothing that is not open and above board and tho statement eliat a representative of a catholic association promised to carry certain districts for senator bard is consideration of a continuation of favorable contracts is ridiculously absurd MTCHELL ACCUSED OF INKING SEVEN BRIBES portland ore feb I 1 interest in the land fraud cases was again raised 10 fever heat by the announcement that tho federal grand jury had late today indicted united states senator john H on another charge 0 bribery and had also indicted state senator george C brownwell one ot the foremost republican politicians and lawyers in this state on charges of subornation of perjury the indictment against mr mitchell alleges that while a senator from this state to the federal congress he ac on seven different occasions burns of money aggregating from a named frederick R kalbe for services rendered in it ia alleged inducing congressman binger hermann then commissioner of the general land office at washington to expedite make special and approve certain applications for public lands and recommend the issuing of patents to the lands the indictment against senator brownell charges that mr brownell caused fred silvers and john howland to swear falsely that certain field in connection with the survey of public lands in eastern oregon were true specifically the indictment against senator matchell Ml recites that kribs was engaged in the business of procuring and aiding persons in making applications to purchase tracts of land in the Ito land district in this end also aiding them to secure the lands by mens of alleged false statements that they were not applying for them on speculation after going on to say that the services of congressman hermann as commissioner of tho general land of lice were necessary in having the applications expedited and having the patents issued the indictment bays that frederick R kalbs contracted for the services of john H mitchell and A II 11 tanner law partners and agreed to pay them for services rendered in part by mr mitchell sparing ring before and persuading banger hermann commissioner of the general land office to special expedite and approve the applications and claims and recommend the issuance of patents upon them as though they were lawful and bonafide applications and claims the indictment states that the united states government was interested in these latter and that the services were to be performed by mr mitchell while a senator from this state the indictment then makes the charges that in consideration of these services kalbs gave mitchell two checks tor each on a Roc burg ore bank on february 13 1002 two checks on the same bank on juno 14 1902 for 1000 each ono check on september 20 1902 for one check on january 4 1904 for and one check on october 8 1904 the indictment against senator brownell involves the same district in which the forged applications tor surveys made upon which ex surveyor general henry meldrim war convicted last amr washington feb 1 it is announced that frederick L alien commissioner of patents will be continued in that office |
