| Show interesting v J FOR the authorities of the church 0 jesus christ of latter day saints are at present working on a plan to colonize the hauey of the milk river in montana for that reason the work which the government Is about toun to un dermake in the way of diversion of waters tn that locality and in establish ing irrigation systems will be 0 great interest in utah the river after circumventing the glacial barrier by entering canada and flowing eastward through parts of alberta and it turns homeward again and loins tho missouri the canadians as yet have turned very little of its waters over their plains for the reason that it flows there high and steep banks and can be lifted to the level of the plain only by expensive pumping but they are awake to the possibility of using the water that now escapes them and plans to this end ft ere being made last the plan our government proposes to carry out wag by engineer C C nabb A canal will be dug tapping the 81 biary river a short distance below the chain of st mary lakes into which the drainage Is collected A large dam at the mouth of the lower lake will turn 11 into a storage reservoir and the canal will carry its waters eastward into spider lake one ot the sources of tho north branch of tha milk river spider lake will also be made a storage reservoir and the mingled waters ot the two rivers will then be led along the canal almost doe south 0 o the southern branch of the milk which will be tapped in its turn and practically all the water of the two systems will then be jed along the plain bome sixty miles to the east turning v wide ot land on either side of it into fertile fields the coat of the whole wark Js estimated at pearly the land to be reclaimed Is now worthless it Is fair to assume that the farms thus created will have the same value as other irrigated lands in montana or an average of a hundred acres at this rate the increment wealth ot the state from these new agricultural lands wl be 1 in land and not less than in live stock r a total of brought into existence by hii alon costing one elata that cum |
