| Show after a lengthy and heated secret session it is decided to retire five bishops be cause of age and ineffectiveness los angelee may after a secret session lasting over ten hours and which was marked by period of great confusion the committee on episcopacy of the methodist general confer ence adjourned shortly atter midnight this morning having decided to retire ot the bishops because of age and ineffectiveness and to choose six and probably eight new bishops the action Is said to be without precedent in the history ot the church there Is little doubt but what the conference will the action of the committee aa all the prominent leaders are bembera of he episcopacy committee the committees will before the general body next tuesday and in the meantime the leaderer will marshal their borcea for the final tray the names of the who will be retired it the recommendation of the committee la accepted have not been made public in the church at large there la said to be a strong sentiment against the retirement of bishops but a majority of the delegates appears at this time desire to see younger and more active men placed on the episcopal board the bishops are elected for life and nearly all of the va cancle heretofore created in the board have been caused by death while in active service the conference is expected to sol the date tor the balloting oa the election of bishops either at lodaya or mondays sessions j the conference this morning fixed upon saturday may as the day ot anal adjournment sunday may 29 there Is to b a graat evangelistic rally at all the protestant churches in the city the rules tor balloting tor bishop were adopted the entire body of delegates accepted the invitation of the bait lake railroad to blatt aver aijo this afternoon and at the days closed the committee on episcopacy made its report to the conference the re urine bishops the following were continued aa intendente john W hamilton david H moore earl kranston mccabe daniel A goodsell isaac W joyce james N fitzgerald H fowler henry W warn and missionary bishops frank W warne joe hartzell and jamea M Tho burne those who will likely b freurd by tho vole taken before adjournment today but aich will be closely guarded until the report next monday arc follows bishops E G andrew J W walden W F mallallel Malla and J H vincent after tour hours consideration of bishop toss effectiveness the subcommittee decided to omit his name from their report dr nuck leye report was presented at tho moment the conference was about to adjourn for the day and came as a surprise to the delegates there were numerous attempts to consideration by parliamentary technicalities but in every case these failed owing to the prompt and decisive action taken by bishop mccabe who waa dine although the delegates had accepted an invitation to visit riverside thia afternoon and had fixed 1145 as the hour of adjournment they wished to hear dr nuck loys report dr after reading his re port made a wry impressive state ment la which ho took occasion to say that a man whose duty it was to present a report of this hind was to be pi tied but he was doing what he had been instructed to do by the commit tee lie sympathized with the aged bishops and believed that every oth cr delegate a the conference felt he did but said dr buckley while wo love them from our hearts we 1 the church better than ourselves it la for the interests of tha church that we take this action the vote was then taken the 1 lots put into the hand of the decre tary of the general conference and report from the tellers will not be pre dented until next monday morning it la to be assumed however that ho recommendations of the episcopacy committee havo been adopted by a large majority in regard to blah op it lg the opinion of many delegates that he too will be ret trea |
