Show ALMANAC BRINGS the sale of the first part of the hurst library completed last evening in the Ar iderson auction rooms was chiefly remarkable tor the extensive special collection ot franklins poor richard almanacs which wag offered the collection ranged in date from the superlatively lat ively rare issue or the year 1739 to the one tor 1766 the former in the original uncut condition was eagerly competed tor and after a lively struggle between dodd mead co of this city and the librarian of the historical society of pennsylvania fell to ih e latter for this Is the earliest poor richard which has leen offered at auction tor nearly twenty five years A few leaves were torn at the edges I 1 the text of one leaf being a little dami aged but the general condition wasl very tain A poor richard for 1744 sold to dodd mead co tor 85 other issues bringing the following prices 1748 1762 45 1753 1757 1759 1761 33 1762 30 35 1764 30 1765 25 aci several of the later issues were in poor condition and the prices were conse i low the total receipts for the first part was about the remainder of the library will be offered during this month and june in a series of sales bringing forward a number of rarities and curiosities including the original manuscripts ot several of the poems published in poes first book tamerlane and other poems 1727 new york times |
