views of many of hn party in iowa yesterday declined to accent the nomination for congress and hns withdrawn from the race speaker ll enderson has addressed the following letter to 0 E albrook of eldora la chairman of the notification committee my dear sirs 1 have never answered the kind notice communicated by you and your associates advising mo of my nomination for the eleventh time by acclamation as republican candidate for congress for the third congressional district of iowa reported conditions in the public mind in my district upon public policies induced me to take thi delay since my return to the district I 1 have made a careful study aa to the sentiment in the district and state and I 1 believe that there is no little senu anent and a growing one among republicans that I 1 do represent views on the tariff question believing this condition to exist and knowing that I 1 do not agree with many of my people that trusts to which I 1 am and have been opposed can be curbed or the people benefited by free trade in whole or in part I 1 must decline to accept the nomination so graciously and enthusiastically made 1 I have devoted twenty of the best years of my life to the service of my people and my country and have fought for what I 1 believed to be best for the farmer the laborer and the business interests of this district and state I 1 am grateful for the devotion that has ever been accorded me and to the hour of my death will hold in a grateful heart the memory of that devotion 1 I will later on give in some detail my views and convictions an our conditions and on public questions and state my reasons why tho republican party and its policies should continue in the confidence of the voters of the united slates and why the doctrines of the democracy should find no lodgment in the faith and teachings of the republican party very truly vours D B sneaker ll enderson announced his withdrawal after a conference of several hours with chairman glassco of the congressional committee and friends last evening speaker ll enderson has been contemplating tah action for two weeks but had intimated nothing of it to his friends until monday at the conference his friends implored him not to take the action but to no avail lie said he had made up hig mind and no argument could cause him to change his decision when asked for his rea eon for his withdraw with drad speaker riender eon said lly letter to chairman albrook i the whole thing in a nutshell you cannot kill the trusts by applying fyee trade without killing our own industries the foreign trusts are fighting the american trust and I 1 do not le licce that for the purpose of controlling american trusts we should make a market for foreign trusts thereby crushing out the industries of this country after my conference last saturday at waterloo hearing the of the chairman of my district I 1 concluded that my on the tariff question were at variance with those of my party and I 1 did not desire to appear in a false position washington SURPRISED washington sept 17 the dispatch announcing speaker declination cli nation of the congressional nomination caused a sensation in washington very fc public men are in washington at this time but all here expressed regret that the speaker had determined on the course announced in the dubuque dispatch the ica ons leading up to his action were perhaps as much a matter of comment as the re filial to stand for election reelection re lalic men acknowledge that there is a de mand in sections of the west and northwest lot a revision of the barill along certain lines notably in the cages of article choso whoso manufacture is controlled by the trusts their opinion is that decision will make this issue more acute and it ia suggested that the president is conferring at this time with leading senators from the east and west presumably on the very question has forced llen derson out of line with his party in iowa the speaker has always been a straight out republican in tariff matter and al the last session of congress the general understanding was that lie opposed the suggestions advanced for tariff rp vinion along certain lines on articles controlled by the trusts gen already had enterer the coming campaign and it is stated here that both gov cummins and senator dolliver both of whom are said to be in favor of tariff revision were to have stumped the district for liim the iowa republican state convention held in the latter part of july took strong ground on the question of reduction of the tariff on goods whose production in this cuntro is controlled by the trusts making the following declaration on that we favor any modifications of the tariff schedules that may be required to prevent their affording shelter tu monopoly Ther ewas a great deal of opposition to this statement but it was finally adopted by the convention it is thought here that this plank in the platform was the one which haa raised the issue in speaker case and has induced him to withdraw various names are suggested by iowa republicans here as candidates for the nomination to succeed II enderson among them being mr courtwright who formerly has been in the race for the nomination C E pickett charles albrook and J II 11 funk secretary wilson of the agricultural department who comes from iowa was when he heard of gen decision remarking that it came as rain from n clear sky lie expressed great regret that the speaker had determined on the course announced but further than that ife declined to make any statement for publication to secretary chaw of the treasury whose residence also is in iowa and who is a great friend of the speakers the news came with equal surprise and regret the secretary in response to a request for an interview on alie subject dictated the following statement 1 I hare not been in iowa since february and hence know little of any change in political sentiment in the all republicans found congenial standing room on the platform last ear the tariff revision plank issue was sufficiently general to occasion no dispute and each put such tion upon the shelter for monopoly utterance as he pleased the language does not say that the tariff does afford shelter but demands any modification fi that may be required to prevent their affording a shelter I 1 think moat speakers took the old time republican view that the tariff is not responsible for trusts if sentiment haa changed I 1 am not advised I 1 regret gen hendersons 8 decision more than I 1 can express and I 1 still hope the re port is unfounded or that he may be induced to recall his declination he was sure of his election in view of gen hendersons Hender determination acme gossip was indulged in as to liis successor as speaker in the event of republican success at the polls in november representative cannon of illinois no doubt will be a candidate for the position with n strong competitor in representative sherman of bew york grosvenor Gro avenor of ohio and Little neld of maine alao are mentioned aa among those who may be forced to the front by their friends in the ahia contest although most public men think that either mr cannon or mr gherman will be the more probable choice of the house |
