Show SPEAKER declination speaker ll enderson of the national house of representatives has declined nomination of the republicans 0 the third iowa district to suc eed himself and his reasons for so doing come the political sensation of the day lie declares hirgelt out of harmony with his party in hi congressional district and prominent member of his party in the nation and thare boic rather than stultify himself by standing in false light and upon a platform out of accord with his view ho has refuted a speaker ll enderson announces chhun haken fealty to the doctrine of protection and in an open defends and tup porta hi position by saying tor three years I 1 have advocated giving control of trusts to congress in my judgment proper supervision can new be had until congress haa to treat them I 1 am glad to see from speeches made by our fearless and upright chief executive that he i advocating federal control over these corporations po rations and while in some quarters aney may at it I 1 have not seen any proposition yet except that seems at all likely to bring relief no proposition haa ever been made by the democracy except to put everything on tho free lit and give the country free trade in other norda they propose to kill the child dead in order to cure it they propone to slaughter every inter pt in the united states whether cap ital oc labor sh a wild and blind effort to de a remedy tor crusts lrus ts Itt opinion if combinations could re regulated and controlled 0 o would hare very little demand for change in the taril law to show how strongly the republican party feela upon the subject in its platform ihk year it de clarea in favor of any modification afif the tariff that may be required to prevent affording shelter to monopoly our democratic friends treat this s moving into fre trad grounds it nothings of the sort it is A bold declaration la that if of the tar iff are required to prevent monopoly from sheltering under the of protection then the tariff hll be to prevent that condition for my part it any great interest in this country i prospering through pro policy or any other legislation nd i ming ils advantage and prosperity to plunder the A meri can people I 1 for one am ready to strike it by whatever legal means we may be able to adopt providing that in so doing we do not hurt innocent interests I 1 am not prepared to say I 1 would be willing to strike down and destroy american combinations and let foreign combinations in and do the work but I 1 would like to control our own corporations po rations so that there could be fair play among the american people I 1 have been more amused than hurt at the suggestions that I 1 have heard against any changes in the tariff while I 1 have been against a general revision recognizing the of president in hi arst message to con gram in which he advises against it I 1 have never been opposed to making needed changer and I 1 am not now 1 must say and emphatically that I 1 do not believe a dingle schedule of the dingley tariff law can be so amended as to relieve texi people from the oppression of trusts or combinations of capital however named and that such action must involve the retarding of our expanding commerce and the getting and holding of foreign markets indeed I 1 believe such plan to be fraught with grave dangers to the people 1 I am a firm believer in reciprocity I 1 worked with untiring zeal to secure reciprocal arrangements between cuba and this country and I 1 was successful in passing it through the house alie senate did not act on the bill because it would have permitted the opening of the whole question of tariff revision the house has nothing to say about the ratification of treaties but the reciprocal resolutions upon which it legislated in respect to cuba were not in the nature of treaties but they were reciprocal arguments in which I 1 think our country must have the best of the bargain doubtless they would of great advantage to cuba while I 1 cannot for the prospects of favorable action upon bills sent to the senate I 1 still hope and be lieve that by treaty the same result may be accomplished and I 1 have no doubt that president roosevelt M now working on the question of a treaty with cuba to give that struggling young republic needed help a help too in which while they will be gainers we will not be lowers and now let me ay and let there be no misunderstanding as to my position I 1 believe in protection that will protect the hand of labor the wheels of industry every farmer and merchant and I 1 am against wicked corporations that would trample upon the rights of people to fair play and the fruits of honest efforts I 1 am against any legislation that would throw my country in panic and bring back the horrors bequeathed thed to us by the lait democratic administration in conclusion I 1 desire to say that after a careful study of conditions and political views in iowa anu in my own j district I 1 am rationed that I 1 am not in harmony with a great many of the i Ke publican voters who believe that free trade in whole or in part will remedy tho anut evil I 1 believe that it will not but such a remedy ii likely to in volve the nation in dangerous re I 1 and I 1 shall not accept the I 1 nomination for congress which was so graciously r tendered me and I 1 believe decided accordingly I 1 cannot part from a people that I 1 have loved and that have honored lue without leaving an expression of my earnest and sincere viens on tah and other vital public I 1 questions the republicans of the country in overwhelming numbers will sustain speaker henderson in hi protect against tends to breakdown I 1 the policy of the republican party although radical action as he has taken in refusing the for congress and allowing the diee to gain an advantage by giving them undue consideration and importance may not seem to be good politics ot the proper thing to do in the circumstances |
